Some time ago, in another thread, a poster said that Initiates who become Padawans have already learned all the techniques they will need as Jedi. They will master advanced techniques later, of course, but they don't become Padawans until they have learned all the basic bread-and-butter techniques that every Jedi Knight must know, all they need is to practice them and to adquire experience and wisdom taking part in real missions.

I said that newly appointed Padawans are thirteen years old at most, and that a kid so young couldn't possible have learned all those techniques.

So, what are your thoughts on the issue?

Ahsoka did. Depends on the strength of ones connection to the Force and abilities. Ezra, for example, has grown pretty quickly (granted, no an official Padawan).

It was acknowledge in AoTC that Anakin's lightsaber skills were almost as good as Master Yoda; he rivalled some Council members. So it's quite possible.

Mmmm.... Kanan was a Padawan for a few months only, and he is able to use Mind Trick and to fight a former Jedi Temple Guard. That points to Initiates really knowing quite a few tricks...

All of the Younglings are Padawans.

YODA: "Hmm. Gravity's silhouette remains... but the star and all the planets... disappeared they have. How can this be? Hmm? A thought? Anyone."

JACK: "Master? Because someone erased it from the archive memory."

YODA: "Truly wonderful the mind of a child is. The Padawan is right."

The way it generally works according to both the old and new EU, is that the Padawan must be paired with a Jedi by at least age thirteen unless given a special reason to wait. Obi-wan was only a couple of days away from turning thirteen when Qui-gon took him on as his Master. Ahsoka and Kanan were fourteen. Most of what they know are the same things that experienced Jedi know. According to the "Jedi Apprentice" books, Obi-wan could do most everything that Qui-gon could do. What they need to learn outside of the Temple is how to conduct themselves as Jedi. Things like we see Obi-wan and Qui-gon do in TPM, Anakin and Obi-wan in AOTC. Those things are what the Masters and Padawans do out in the field.
