Exactly. And I won't stand for it or support it either. But, if any of you generous Jedi would like to purchase it for me, I won't decline. ;)

Too much information...Padawan tries to download too much at once...too much cool stuff on Hyperspace to take in at once...must get other people to try it.

TINSTAAFL, There is no such thing as a free lunch. Those freebies on movie site aren't give aways, they are ads developed by marketing departments to get you to see/buy what they want. You "pay" for it with your time and their tracking your computer use to pinpoint future ads for you.

The way I see it is we wouldn't be getting any of the stuff on Hyperspace if we weren't paying for it. After all George is running a business not a nonprofit.

The web cam? costs money to set up the network, keep it running and to store all those pictures on their server. I think its cool to be able to see sets going up and the costumes being made.

The Set Diary? air fare to Sydney ($2-3,000) for the writer, hotel/room for 6-8 weeks plus their transportation and food. Then someone has to code the page and put it up. Not to mention its being done by a member of the Insider. George could of just hired a free lance instead of going to the trouble of including the fanclub. Does this mean the Insider will have a few more goodies later on that they might not of? I hope so. This person has unprecedented access to all the actors and behind the scenes people.

Bantha Tracks? I don't think these are stored on the hard drive in MS Word. They's need to be converted if they have them on computer. If they don't then someone has to manually type the pages out or scan each and every page, then clean it up, code it, and put it up.

Is this an experiment? Yes it is. Are a lot of businesses watching to see what happens? You bet they are. Are they going to be as successful setting up a for pay site? Not necessarily. Its all about whether the buyer is willing to pay for what they get. The Internet, like the real world, is all about money. The brief heyday of everything being free on the Internet is gone, gone for good, and our country's current economic situation is partly a result of the bill for it coming due.

I am a consumer who is making a decision to purchase a product. To date I am very happy with what I've bought. Will I renew next year? Most likely as Ep 3 won't come out for another year. Will I renew after Ep 3 comes out? I don't know, depends if I still feel I'm getting my moneys worth.

You are welcome to your opinion but please don't condem me for being willing to pay for something you're not.

Sorry about the lecture/rant but as a librarian I constantly get people who don't understand why they can't get all the information they want for free on the internet. The saying "you get what you pay for" may be the new business motto for the Internet.

Malo-ha, you make some good points. However, I'd like to offer some food for thought. I know in our current society we have both public libraries (free information/reading material) and bookstores (purchased information/reading material). Hypothetically speaking, I would think you would be out of a job if all libraries restructured themselves and started to charge money for access. I know that other than when I need a book for school, I rarely go to the library unless I want to pleasure read. And generally if I like the book that much anyway, I'll purchase it. If I had to pay to read it from a library, I'd be less willing to be a member of the library. You'd have a lot less people coming through who would feel the same way. People deserve to have information for free at public libraries. It is the same with the Internet. While I understand that Lucas has a business (actually I think he's up to 7 now) to run, he is by no means hurting monetarily. The irony is that the Star Wars movies are all about the evil connected to materialism and commercialism, (the Trade Federation's greed allowed Palpatine to exploit them for his own rise in power) and yet Lucas himself is guilty of this by charging money for "exclusive" material that he should make public anyway. Lucas could personally pay all of an Insider reporter's expenses with plenty of pocket change to spare. Lucas has created a media Empire, and now he is only tightening his grip. It is only a matter of time before more star systems, I mean die-hard Star Wars fans, slip through his fingers.

While that is true (to a point) you're overlooking the fact that even at a library...someone has to pay the bills. The same goes for the internet, while access to information is nice...it does cost someone (if not directly) to have it available.

he is by no means hurting monetarily
That does not obligate him to leave everything out in the open. GL has every right to created a media Empire...without worry of being labeled "greedy", that's what capitalism is all about...he's created a product that (we) the public have expressed interest in and he has every right to charge us for access to that product(s). Yes, GL has earned a great deal of money from SW (I say emphasis the word "earned" because some people feel they own SW more then GL) products...and the choice to purchase these is with us the individual consumer. If you choose not to partake of Hyperspace...that's your choice; don't go around calling people "sell out" because they feel it is worth the investment.

Is this an experiment? Yes it is. Are a lot of businesses watching to see what happens? You bet they are
If GL didn't think of it...someone else would have. For too long people have used the internet as a free pass to almost everything. If Hyperspace is the begining of a trend by companies to protect their copyrighted material from being exploited by some individuals...then that's the way it's gonna be. Learn to deal with it...because the "information superhighway" has a toll.

Your argument about free information at libraries is quite valid Random. But it is the type of information offered at libraries vs bookstores that is important. Medical information, car repair manuals, Comsumer Reports, information on prescription drugs all are offered free of charge at libraries. They might be at bookstores but the average person can't afford to buy many of these. Believe me the pay for use argument is still a hot topic in libraries when the budgets get slashed. Fortunately we have always managed to make do and not charge people. Book stores will only carry titles that sell not reference books. Borders became so popular because they allow people to sit and read without buying. But never forget they are in business to sell their merchandise and if some corporate suit ever thought it was necessary the reading areas would go.

The problem is that people come in and expect to find free of charge on the internet things like legal information, personally tailed to their situation, ready to print out. Financial information including complex analysis of a stock's history and recommendations for buying. They can't believe they are being charged for car title histories or a copy of their credit report. They get upset because this information isn't free. They feel the businesses should be giving them this at no cost.

and yet Lucas himself is guilty of this by charging money for "exclusive" material that he should make public anyway.

Why should he make this available for free? Its his property. Lucas has been incredibly tolerant about allowing fans the freedom to use his copywrited material. Look at some other fandoms (Buffy for example) and what they go through. He has a right to protect whats his.

Lucas has created a media Empire, and now he is only tightening his grip. It is only a matter of time before more star systems, I mean die-hard Star Wars fans, slip through his fingers.

True this has turned off some fans but I have noticed that the disaffected are the ones who refuse to pay. Not very many people who have subscribed have cancelled their subscription and demanded their money back. The rants are all about having to pay not the content on the site. Lucas may be the first to set up a pay site but he is also setting the bar very high for any who would follow him.

Careful DRD-1812 if D'Argo finds you wandering around Moya in circles he may kick you.

You had a lot of good things to say Mary.

Yes and no. This is a gray area, because if you want to read anything worthwhile about Episode III, then you have to get Hyperspace. Yeah, there are the Ask Jocasta Nu questions that are answered about Episode III, but nothing has really been revealed in the manner that Hyperspace is showing stuff. I just think it's a shame that Lucas knows he has such a loyal fan base and continually milks every dollar he can from them, even when he knows he'd be sitting pretty if he retired tomorrow.

That is the sticking point. Although it does seem that there are a lot of people willing to paraphrase the highlights for everyone else so you're not in a complete information blackout. Its always rough when our personal ethics smacks up against something as powerful as our Star Wars obsession. Something has to give and its not pretty.

I don't remember too much what the spoilers were like for ATOC after filming finished. I was finishing my Masters degree at the time. Star Wars and 5 papers, 2 group projects, finishing a Thesis and several finals do not mix well. It was Memorial Day weekend before I saw it. It did keep me fairly spoiler free though. I remember that most of the spoilers came from fans getting pictures while they were on location. Which may be 1 reason why Lucas isn't doing locations this time. I do remember they were nothing like what we are getting from Hyperspace.

So if there wasn't a Hyperspace what do you think we would be getting from Oz right now? A weekly diary? Pictures? Do you think if there wasn't Hyperspace would fans be trying harder to get info? I certainly do.

I do hope that while the rep from Insider is there that they are getting a least a few things that will be exclusive to the Insider. If only as a reward for their subscribers. Actually I will be upset if there isn't at least a few.

    EDIT: spelling

What is GL doing that is any different from professional sports teams, rock stars, or even other movie franchises? He's created a product which you (and the rest of us) enjoy greatly, and asks to be properly compensated for his efforts. The only thing Hyperspace is doing is offering fans a chance to get reliable information about Episode III, for those who don't want to be at the mercy of every little website with an "exclusive" fromthe source. It don't get much better then that.

even when he knows he'd be sitting pretty if he retired tomorrow
The only reason he is "sitting pretty" is because GL has been very smart about protecting his investments and products, and there is nothing wrong with that...nor does "doing well" obligate him to open up his wallet and let the fans feast.

For those of us who couldn't make it to C-bus...the people from Insider tried to assure everyone that while "Hyperspace" has all the exclusive information on the website, Star Wars insider is going to have plenty of good stuff for fans to read about...possibly even stuff posted on "Hyperspace" at an earlier time.

I can understand why some fans are disappointed that this information is not free but it is GL's product and he does have a right to charge for it. Is anyone concerned about spoilers? I guess I read too many detective novels (besides other fiction) and I start to figure things out too quickly. I love being surprised when I go to a movie and want the experience to be as new and fresh as possible. There is so much about Episode 3 that we can already assume anyway that who wants to know all the rest beforehand?

Hypothetically speaking, I would think you would be out of a job if all libraries restructured themselves and started to charge money for access.

I agree! And may the day never come when we do have to start charging although right now libraries in Ohio (and especially the smaller ones) are facing budget crunches.
As Mary wrote: Fortunately we have always managed to make do and not charge people.

And fortunately there is an abundance of free information still on the Internet. In fact, some libraries provide all sorts of free guides, indexes, etc. My own library (see there, Random, I am admitting where I work ;)) has prepared a free index to science fair information that I know I am shamelessly plugging.

I can't see why this would be called being spoiled...so far nothing I have read or seen has really been a spoiler to me. They aren't telling us the plot or the set by set what is what nor is the webcam giving any major surprises to me. It is just letting me hear and see some behind the scenes things and it is interesting and WORTH every penny I paid for it because the info. they are giving is very funny and interesting. If they had asked for more I would have given them it. This is a very good idea and should be a thought for others. The internet isn't free to anyone really...I mean we have to pay for our website and we don't even have anything on it yet...we have to pay to get on too, why can't Lucas get some of the money back?
