I might be able to make it depending on location/funds needed (even if really difficult though I would look for workarounds; it would be fun).

Guys how is the 7th floor of an apartment building earthquake wise? After today's unsettling earthquake I'm concerned.

If its modern, it will just sway back and forth

If its old, it will explode.

3rd floor, here. The total damage to my place in Philly was a knocked over picture frame, a knocked over Rocketeer statue, rattling vertical blinds, and the lamp above the kitchen table was swaying. Quite steady. But, in California, you'll probably be killed. Buildings collapse there all the time.

Since you'll be on one higher floors, a quake like the one today (or one smaller) might feel bigger than it really is, as I've heard the intenstity of shaking is greater the higher you are in a building. I'm not entirely sure how accurate that is.

I used to live in a 4th floor apartment and depending on the severity, it was generally a good 'sway'. We never had any things knocked over.

Dang, now I see the talk of stuff going down a few days ago.

Basic explanation of high rises in earthquakes. There are two options a building has.
Option 1: The building sways during the earthquake, higher levels will feel more motion than lower levels
Option 2: The building doesn't sway. The building snaps in two.

Option 1 isn't that bad, as it just means you keep moving for longer, mainly.

Are you saying I'm going to die. This building was made in the 20s. Am I going to die. I assume it's been worked on since, it looks nice. But still. I need to know lowbacca. Tell me the truth.

Just try not to be in the antiquated open air elevator during an earthquake. Your building probably runs theirs on a rope & pulley system, and you will surely die a horribly, unenviable death.

I have trained my hormones to make me spontaneously combust in such an event. That building will not have at me.

Make sure you flirt with the doorman so that he fancies you enough to allow you to pull him over you in the event of the building capsizing. His spine can take it.

A building from the 20s? That means it survived the following quakes in Southern California
    1933: 6.3 in Long Beach
    1952: 7.5 in Kern County
    1971: 6.6 in Sylmar
    1987: 5.9 in Whittier
    1991: 5.8 NE of Pasadena
    1994: 6.7 in Northridge

Anything that's still standing after that long has been tested by plenty of earthquakes. If it was going to fall, it would've. That's my stance, anyway.

Looks like its been weakened by 6 big quakes, thing will probably fall over with a strong gust of wind.

As far as I know, the codes apply to old buildings as well. I know that at least the houses I've lived in (built 1924 and 1947) were retrofitted.

Where'd you find a house built before 1930? Did they let you stay there after it became a museum?

Yes, the 1994 event is/will always been known as the Northridge quake, but technically/actually the quake was centered right here in Reseda (my townhome complex rests directly atop the epicenter). :-B

I should smack those glasses off that smilie.

Like, the Sylmar quake wasn't in Sylmar, and the Whittier quake wasn't in Whittier.
