JCC I hate emoticons - why don't you?

There's very little way to convey tone in a text message except through emoticons. Sarcasm can be mistaken for sincerity, for example.

Plus they're cute.

I thought the title was "I hate emotions." I was going to agree, but emoticons? How dare you.

 

If I could find a use for that %^$#@*& chicken, you'd better believe I'd be using it in EVERY.OTHER.POST.

 

I hate it when I'm trying to type colon and right parenthesis and I hit the dollar sign instead.

 

But the dollar sign is way left of the... oh, never mind.

 

And yet some emoticons are so crucial to understanding somebody, like this:

I truly do despise emojis. They're dumb.

 

In RL, voice tone and facial expressions help clarify meaning. We don't have those available to us on text-based message boards. Hence, emoticons.

Ugh, that's one of the few emoticons I won't use. Smug condescension indeed. Especially when preceded by a really nasty declarative statement.
