I got the SWHS before Christmas a couple years ago...I figure I'll watch it during the holidays, and that's it.

It is SOOOOOOOO bad, and the Wookie porn tape was just the icing on the cake. The Boba Fett cartoon was kinda cool though.

 

It's my favorite. I'm still waiting for the novelazation of it

I was hoping that the holiday special was going to be on the trilogy dvds. Now THAT is something I would like to hear commentary on.

 

commentary for holiday special DVD:

"...Yes...We were all sniffing crack heavily when we did this scene...oh yeah, and that one too...and that one...and oh! for that one, we were so ^&*@@# up! ha ha ha! Yeah...the 70s were GREAAAAT...."

 

I went ahead and bought a VCD version of the Holiday Special last week...and many might think I've been living on the inside of Jabba's hooka for too long, but I actually don't think that parts of it are that bad. To be honest, parts of it are actually superior to TPM. Seriously.

I took the liberty of writing down some observations (yep, I have no life)while I was watching it...for the overwhelming majority who have never seen it.

The good: I don't care what anyone says, but I actually like seeing a little slice of domestic life in the SW galaxy...it's actually nice to know that Chewie has a LIFE outside of being an outlaw hero type.

Probably the best part is seeing a more in-depth look at the relationship between Han and Chewie. The way that Harrison and Peter work together, it really makes me wish someone would have invested some time and money into filming the Brian Daley novels.

It's surprising that Harrison actually put some effort into what amounts to an extended cameo. He shows that underneath Han's cocky exterior, Han really wants more of an existence than what he's been living. He looks almost wistful when he's with Chewie's family...and when he tells Malla that they are like family to him, I have to admit that I got a little teary-eyed. It adds an interesting dimension to Han's character.

I really didn't mind Art Carney's character (a trader called Sondan, for the uninitiated). Yeah, there were parts of his performance that were slightly schticky, but it's a better role than playing second banana to Jackie Gleason. Although I could have done without seeing so much of his potbelly...

It was good to see Boba...and a tiny snippet of some cut footage from Star Wars.

Kenner completely missed out when they never bothered to make stuffed Banthas. How come they didn't? If Lumpy can have one, what about me?!!!!!

Pocket sized aquarium...quirky.

Malla, a strong female character for a series that suffers from a shortage of such a thing...

The ugly: That porn sequence...good God...who was doing lines when they wrote that?!!!!! What is it doing in the middle of
a show that was primarily aimed at children?
And what are the precise mechanics behind a "mind evaporator"? If you take it to be some sort of device that extracts images from a being's mind and puts them in a fantasy setting, where the heck did Itchy see this chick? Unless...this chick is Chewie's mom!!!! [face_shocked]

I will only say this once: NO HARVEY KORMAN IN THE SW UNIVERSE!!!!!

I really don't get the people who say they like the cartoon...aside from Boba being in it, the thing sucks on toast. It's poorly drawn, I don't know why the Rebellion would need an invisibility talisman...and no wonder those creatures were always hungry that planet is covered in tomato sauce!

Bea Arthur and Carrie Fisher cannot sing. Just remember that. (And was I the only one who thought Carrie looked high?).

Why oh why did the Jefferson Starship need to be in there? Was this someone's poor idea of a joke...you know, Starship and Star Wars, what a pun!

Can someone hand me a blaster so I can shoot that bloody acrobatic troupe? I truly like to believe that the SW galaxy has evolved beyond the point of circus acts.

Some things I am fairly certain don't exist in this galaxy: plastic bags, wrapping paper and bows, computers from the 70's, walkie talkies for Imperial officers (hey, what happened to comlinks?), and four-armed Julia Child aliens.

Just say no to that Tatooine sequence.

Why were a bunch of Wookiees wearing remnants from a Jawa jumble sale? Couldn't they have just stuck with the ending of the Wookiees sitting down to dinner? Did we really need to see Wookiees walking single file into a light show?

Wookie Porn....where can I get that?

 

This was one of the first things I ever downloaded when I got the internet, and that was almost 3 years ago.... Know what? I've never watched the whole thing. I heard the cartoon was good, but I couldn't even make it that far. It was literally painful to watch.

I suspect that people who say the cartoon is good are really subconsiously thinking that when compared to the greater garbage that surrounds it.

(Was the four armed cook anything like Dexter?)
