Amph I Must Be The Only Person Who Doesn't Like...

So the Evangelion thread brought this to mind - that there are a few things I think each person doesn't like that they feel like they're the only person in the world who doesn't. I'm not talking about polarizing stuff like Napoleon Dynamite or Scott Pilgrim that have passionate defenders and critics. I mean stuff that's basically universally loved and praised, but that you either don't get or just don't like. So I wondered what they were for you all.

I'm hoping for more of a "secret confessions" atmosphere than a flame war atmosphere. You can say what your reasons for not liking it are, but nobody's an idiot, a fool, or a Nazi for liking something you don't.

Let me get the ol' ball rolling myself:

John Hodgman: I don't get it. To me, he's just a guy who does boring, banal stuff, but does it with a knowing hipster smirk that somehow makes doing it edgy and cool. Nope - it's still just boring, banal stuff. I stopped following him on Twitter when he live-tweeted a Scrabble game he was playing that went on for hours. In deep, exacting detail. Maybe I'm not hip enough, but that was it for me.

Star Trek: Let's exempt Wrath of Khan, which is an admittedly-great movie here. Other than that, and maybe a handful of interesting episodes interspersed throughout decades of this show, I find it to be a preachy snoozefest.

Doctor Who: I tried to like it. I really did. I even find the Eccleston episodes tolerable. But take my reasons for not liking Star Trek and add to them a weird, bioplar writing style that alternated between wacky, weepy, and preachy, and... not my thing.

Akira: I love anime. But I just don't see the appeal here. Screaming motorcycle buttmonkeys yell... and stuff. Even Otomo has done better work - check out the inconsistent, but often-brilliant Robot Carnival for that.

Inception: I'll grant you that this was an exceptionally well-made movie. But having seen some of the obscure films that this obviously drew a lot of inspiration from - Paprika comes to mind - I just couldn't go along with what people were saying about how original and innovative this movie was supposed to be, and I guess that kind of soured me on it.

 

I did Nazi that criticism coming!

ed-209: i don't get it. what was ocp trying to do with this one? were they seriously trying to better robocop? was it merely a dick jones vanity project? a physical manifestation of his jealousy towards bob morton and his genius creation? what a JOKE! how anyone could like that ugly-ass, falling-down-the-stairs-ass, terribly-programmed-ass, executive-murdering-ass, counting-down-ass piece of junk is wayyyyyy beyond me.

For the most part, I didn't really like Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy.
His Batman interpretation feel like James Bond meets 24 and Heat with Batman masks. I understand it's a valid attempt to ground the character in reality, but it constantly broke it's own rules and tried to squeeze in as many storylines as possible to distract from it's storytelling/ dialogue flaws. I think the scripts are the worst part of Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy. Ham-fisted pep talk, ill-fitting lighter moments and expository dialogue that just never should have been part of these films. And don't get me started on the extemist fans themselves, referred to as Nolanites, who send out death threads to anyone who dares to question the utter brilliance of Nolan's work.

LOTR: For the most part, I am not a big Sword and Sorcery Fantasy genre fan. I did see Fellowship in theaters twice at the time and bought a couple of action figures, but my interest in the follow-ups waned quickly. I haven't read the books and only judged the films on their own merits, so I generally couldn't understand the universal praise of them, as much of an undertaking they were to produce.

Quentin Tarantino: Such an overrated, overhyped filmmaker. His films can be entertaining, but the way they are put on a pedestal by his worshippers and the media even before release is sickening. I still can't get that effin' whistling song from Kill Bill out of my head because everyone kept using it as their ring tone.

Megan Fox: I never got what the masses drooled over. Any actress with a shred talent is automatically more appealing than her.

Here's an odd one: porn

No, really - I know that everyone here will claim in deep seriousness that they never, ever watch any porn, but I'm both serious and not trying to be holier-than-thou here. I have plenty of pictures of undressed and underdressed girls around, but no actual hardcore pornography. I just don't get the appeal. I like looking at pretty girls, but adding some sweaty dude's twig and berries to the picture isn't an improvement to that experience as far as I'm concerned. Besides that, to me, watching hardcore porn is like sitting on a couch watching someone else playing a videogame - as much fun as they may be having, watching them have fun doesn't necessarily do anything for me.

Avatar: Okay, I had a bad movie experience on that one- a group of people snuck into the viewing during intermission, they instantly started misbehaving, it got to an argument and it ended up with knife threats and the likes). However, apart from the 3D effect, which unfortunately didn't really work during the screening I was at (due to low bulb brightness *cough* cheapskates *cough*), I really couldn't identify any discernible characters. It all felt like generic filler.

Narutakikun, funny that you mention it, I have an unusual standpoint to porn, too:

Even when I was in early teens and starting to develop interest in the subject matter, I already preferred looking at soft core imagery. Thanks to the internet I am now aware of most sorts of porn in existence and, quite frankly, lost a lot of my belief in humanity as a result of it.
The way I see it, a nude woman depicted in a non sexual situation is far more sensual and interesting than one in any type of porn environment.

 

The Dark Knight - I haven't seen the Dark Knight Rises, but the second in the trilogy was a mess.
The Hobbit - I read the novel after reading the LOTR trilogy and thought it was a regression in every way.
Facebook - I never had an account. I don't compare my life to staged, narrated moments of other people's.
College Football - I prefer to watch the NFL. I don't understand why schools have legions of hysterical fans who never attended.
McDonald's - I don't eat there. Sometimes, I get iced coffee there.

 

I find it interesting that you think The Hobbit was a regression when it preceded the Lord of the Rings by several years.

However LOTR in general. I found it plodding and overwrought when reading it and unexciting when watching it. I never watched the films again after watching a marathon at the cinema and am generally happy with that state of affairs.

 

Here's another odd one: Music

I don't hate music, per se; I just never listen to it and have next to no interest in it. My iTunes library consists of under 1000 songs which I basically never listen to, but about 4000 individual episodes of the 62 podcasts to which I subscribe, a little over 500 radio dramas (both Golden Age and modern), and almost 200 audiobooks. So I have a 64GB iPod that's full of stuff that I'm constantly listening to, but it's all spoken-word.

I know that that's pretty odd in our totally music-obsessed culture, but there it is. Basically, music doesn't do anything for me.

 

I actually don't much care about music either. I can't recall the last time I bought an album. I lost my iPod 18 months ago and never replaced it. I listen to music in the car on the radio and that's about it.

 

I might not feel this way had I not read the sequels first. The LOTR is epic, with loads of characters, places, civilizations and history. It expanded Tolkien's universe. After finishing LOTR, I expected more of the same from Tolkien's other works. The Hobbit doesn't have the scale of the LOTR. Its plot is simple. Frankly, I don't see how it can fill three movies.

I was going to post "music" and was surprised to see it already listed. I really don't get people who have to be playing music all the time. All day long. Everywhere.

And definitely college football. A few good players are interspersed with people without talent. It's not interesting. That's also why I don't watch the Cleveland Browns.
