Now that I've seen it, I can circle back around to say authoritatively that this was in fact a stupid movie.

 

Drugs

Buffy. I can't stand the main character.

Second and third of the LOTR movies. Way to ruin my favorite characters, Mr. Jackson.

Game of thrones (books). They're well written and everyone is gushing how realistic they are but it's not what I'm looking for in my fantasy reading. I like the TV show, especially when it's unintentionally hilarious.

Fifty Shades of Grey (ok, I didn't even try reading it, the excerpts were enough).

Speaking of Star Wars... Most of the Hoth portion of TESB. Boring and doesn't add much to the overall story.

Mushrooms (not the hallcinagens, the veggies). I don't get why everybody's so hung up on a vegtable that in a lot of varieties is poisonous.

 

Water, in a lot of varieties, is poisonous. Add just one more atom of our friend oxygen to our friend water, and you have rocket fuel.

 

I hate mayo too. My chicken or tuna salad consist of the food in a garden salad. Or with mustard. But mayo...blech. I can taste the egg.


Natalie - I didn't try "Fifty Shades" either. There are plenty of books that are porn-like that are well written and not based off a fanfic. And they've been around for years. People act like this is new.

No it isn't. Water in no variety is poisonous. Because it basically has only one variety. That's like saying spoons are dangerous in knife form.

 

In anime:

The Haruhi Suzumiya franchise: I'll grant this is extremely high-quality animation. I just can't ****ing stand the main character. She's not a tsundere, she's a ****. There's a difference. Sorry, watching a sociopathic bully victimize people is not my idea of fun. Pass.

Azumanga Daioh: Like watching a four year old trying to tell a joke. Each episode felt like a half hour worth of setup for a punchline that never came.

K-On: Four cute girls do very, very boring stuff. See also: Lucky Star, Tari Tari, basically all moé.

Evangelion: Cliché + pretentious != genius. Early Gainax is genius, but basically, after Nadia was released, their best work was all behind them. BTW, their latest, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, stands at #2 on my own personal worst anime of all time list, after only the unforgivable Macross 7. Even Tenshi ni Narumon, the only anime to ever make me physically ill, doesn't rank that high.

College sports--It's basically "minor league" sports, and the players come and go quickly that you can't form any attachment with them. Not to mention, the self-righteousness of its fans who constantly extoll its "purity" over the professionals is nauseating.

Stephen Colbert--This is not a partisan thing at all. All things considered, I consider myself a liberal, but Colbert's act is so one-note and derivative.

 

Yes. This. As I've said someplace before, Colbert's schtick is basically that he pretends to be a Republican and then acts like a ****. But - who couldn't you do that to? I could pretend to be a Democrat - or a Communist, or a monarchist, or a Presbyterian, or a Jew, or a Scotsman, or a bicyclist - and act like a ****, and that would prove... what, exactly?

Not funny. Not insightful, Not satirical. Screw that guy.

Conversely, for me, pro sports. Can't find the excitement out of it.

 

How could I forget musicals? Can't bloody stand them. I was all excited by the Les Mis film until I found out it was an adaptation of the musical and not the book.

Regarding music; I like music in general (and some of it quite a bit), but I just don't keep up with whatever's currently popular at all... and when I do I think it just really sucks (especially "Top 40 / Pop" stuff).
The same point also goes for a lot of currently popular TV shows (and to a somewhat lesser extent, movies).

 

1. Boring? Terrible character? HE'S THE COWARDLY FREAKING LION, he's supposed to be scared and dumb that's the way he was made to be, and the actor is awesome playing him. It wasn't supposed to be a scary movie or anything (although the wicked witch scarred me for a very long time..) but still that movie is awesome and this hate from this thread against it is unfounded, just plain wrong, and unprecedented.

2. Based actually off the books? No. I've read the actual Wizard of Oz book. You do not want the book. You want the movie. It's more violent, and not really for kids at all. And supposedly actually political in nature.

 

I'm glad you're the only one who has read or knows anything about the book, Arlon, and can tell us in absolute terms what everyone else in the world wants.
