Ok, my friend, for some reason, refuses to believe me when I say that Obi-Wan Kenobi was not killed by Darth Vader, but gave himself to the Force just as Vader swung.

Now, I just need a link to some Lucas interview or something that might cement this.

Obi-Wan's bio on StarWars.com kind of blurs the lines here, but, I know there must be something out there.

During Darth Vader and Obi-Wan's duel, George Lucas says during the commentary, "...That the surprise is at the end of this is that Vader doesn't kill him but that he's able to join the Force and by being one with the Force..."

No. He WAS killed by Darth Vader - or rather his physical self was. As he died he became one with the force.

Tell him to watch the movie. Good enough evidence for me.

he gave himself to the force. period end of story
if you watch closley he makes peace with himself and then disapears just before vader's light saber slices through his cloak.
that's how he was able to communicate with luke so quickly

He does indeed give himself to the force....the instance before Vaders swing would have struck him down. Vader does not get the satisfaction...Yoda also gives himself to the force...He laid down...says he earnd it then whoop! is gone......just like kaiser sose'

Ya know I convinced myself of this a while ago but I dismissed it as rubish and my uber-obi--fandom gone to new heights.

Though I do like the idea of him dieing before the saber hits him, I think its implied by the movie that Vader slays him. Oh well... it's everyone's little universe. [face_flag]

"If you strike me down I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."

Sounds like Vader "killed" him to me... ;)

^^^ if you want to split hairs , yes. ;) . but how fruitless it must be for Vader. ObiWan turns his Saber off. sweet victory indeed. [face_laugh]

I think both of you are right.

    Vader killed him.

And he became one with the force.

My impression was that he had to actually die to become one with the force. And it is a trick question because instead of dying he transformed, which means that Vader didn't actually kill him but unwittingly assisted in the transformation.

Isn't it like Obi-wan gave himself to the Force by letting Vader kill him?

Yoda doesn't give himself to the Force, he dies. If he had given himself willingly, we wouldn't have "There....is.....another....Sk......y......wal.....ker....."
