This is a thread for people to talk about the 1987 spoof "Spaceballs", which I feel deserves every single amount of praise it recieves. Yes I think it is really that funny. From the opening crawl to the credits, it never failed to make me laugh. I feel that the funniest moment is after Lord Dark Helmet finds out that almost everyone around him has the last name of ***hole, when he goes "I knew it. I'm surrounded by ***holes. Keep firing ***holes."

On a more serious note, I loved the way that Mel Brooks was able to create villians that I wanted to survive. It is something that I have only experienced twice. Once in Spaceballs and once in Dracula: Dead and Loving It, another Mel Brooks film.

Whatever happened with the Prequel/Sequel?

 

In September 2004, a sequel to Spaceballs entitled Spaceballs 2 was announced in an interview with Mel Brooks. Brooks said he hoped to have the sequel come out some time around the theatrical release of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. It was later planned to be turned into an animated television show, but, except for that announcement, there has been no news regarding the sequel. More recent rumors suggest Brooks is in fact working on a sequel, but not a TV series. A common rumor (but not canon among fans) is that the sequel will be called Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money in reference to a joke in the original movie (actually, a common feature of Brooks movies is that they must include a reference to an unmade sequel).

I love that movie, in fact I love everything by Mel Brooks. Maybe some things a little less... but still! Mel Brooks is awesome.

Wow, Spaceballs! What an absolutely hilarious movie that is probably my favorite comedy ever! It is a piece of genius, the cast is brilliant and the jokes never get old! When I was in high school marching band we saw Spaceballs on our long trip to Florida, and afterwards we would quote it to each other to amuse ourselves.

One of my favorite quotes that is obviously tweaked from our beloved SW, but I love it anyway...

Dark Helmet: Not so fast, Lone Starr.
Lone Star: Helmet. So, at last we meet for the first time for the last time. Yeah.
Dark Helmet: Before you die, there is something you should know about us, Lone Star.
Lone Star: What?
Dark Helmet: I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former room-mate.
Lone Star: What's that make us?
Dark Helmet: Absolutely nothing.

 

Last I heard they were skipping it and going straight to Spaceballs 3: The Search for Part 2.

I don't know if I like the recent idea of making it animated. It could be cool though. I had thought I'd heard that it would be done similar to Team America but I can't back that up.

 

i loved towards the end in the diner. they actually got John Hurt to come back for the Alien scene. "Not again..."

 

Actually what I saw was that there was going to be TWO sequels, the first would be titled spaeballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2. And the third in the trilogy would be entiltled Spaceballs 2: The search for more money

The opening scene with the ship that never ends is probably the best part.

Rumor has it that Mel Brooks is trying to get Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money up and running. I kid you not, Spaceballs 2 could very well happen within the next few years.

That would be awesome if there was a sequel to Spaceballs, though I really wonder what mel Brooks would do about John Candy's character.

I heard somewhere that they were going to do an animated series. I can't remember where I read it though.

 

I'm not sure that it would work out so well.
