It's the only real reading that makes sense. Especially when one considers that Yoda made absolutely no attempt train other Force sensitives after finishing the intensive course with Luke. Nor, for that matter, did Leia even come up at all, until the specter of Luke's failure rose. They wanted exactly one replacement Jedi to kill the Sith, and then to die himself, riding the Galaxy of the influence of Force users.

 

But I'm pretty sure Jedi practice asceticism.

No it isn't. Even if we accept the premise that Luke was somehow the only person who could defeat Vader, it still makes absolutely no sense that in 30 years, they chose to train exactly one person with less than six weeks of active instruction. We can say they didn't want their teachings to spread because they specifically avoided spreading them. It's pretty cut and dry.

 

I can't wait to see what you make of Episode VII.

 

I'll be really surprised if he watches it at all (hell, I'll be surprised if I do).

 

Disney has a deal with Netflix that guarantees all of its movies will be on streaming by 2015 (including subsidiaries such as Marvel, Pixar, LFL), so maybe I'll just wait until Episode VII shows up on there.


Nah, I'll probably see it in theaters and be completely unable to distinguish it from the Marvel films and the Star Trek reboot except for laser swords and Harrison Ford phoning in a cameo.

 

It wasn't a blanket command. Yoda specified one other individual in the entire universe who it would be acceptable to train. The person who happened to be his twin. Further, the subsequent conversation with Kenobi makes clear that they basically viewed Luke as a failure who had ruined his training program by rushing in headlong, and who was now unwilling to do what was necessary to kill Vader. That was the context of the remark you're quoting. They decided he was a failure and asked that he at least attempt to bring his replacement up to speed, so they can have their one final shot at everything.

 

When are you going to either "like" OS' post, or apologise for lying to her in such a deceitful manner?
