My sentiments exactly... I reckon Jackson will just sneak it. He took what many thought would be an impossible task, took it by the neck and shook out one helluva cool movie... plus he's a novice in the eyes of the academy. One hell of a way of marking your arrival in Hollywood! :D

see that's what made it difficult to decide

Jackson should win for his screenplay of LotR, no doubt there, but in the major awards, it tends to be one film that dominates... and if a beautiful mind is the film which dominates then howard will win it. And then there's Altman who is well received by them too isn't he? Scott won't win, not this year at any rate, so I see it as Howard Vs Jackson Vs Altman (as I said, I want Lynch cos he is cool)

So if LOTR doesn't sweep, does that mean ya'll are gonna get all whiney like when TPM got supposedly "snubbed?"

TPM was rubbish...it did not deserve to win anything...

    on the otherhand LOTR...

Look my argument is if films like Gladiator and Titanic sweep the boards..

If TPM had won anything major I would have gone over to the states and murdered the judges personally. The only non-wooden peripheral performance in the whole film was McDiarmid's

So .......... am I the only one who thinks the Oscars are nothing but a convention for self-agrandizing back-slappers to explore the inner workings of each other's (_!_)holes in front of an audience of screaming proles desperately in need of somebody, anybody, to inject some meaning into the withered husks of their lonely, pointless lives?

No, but it's usually an entertaining show. ;)

First off - TPM was a great movie :p but for it to win anything other than technicals would have been sheer stupidity - although Trisha Biggar was cruelly robbed!

Secondly - The fact that LotR has been nominated for 13 (quick pinch - yep, not asleep ;)) is a cause for celebration in itself.

As to whether it will win anything - perhaps the Academy will think 'We've nominated it - that's enough' Look at Crouching Tiger last year... QED

Re: whinging if LotR just gets the techs. Only a little! :D

No, I think that the fact that it's done so damn well for itself is just wonderous and of course it repays all the faith that Peter Jackson, New Line and everyone else had in this huge risk admirably.

The extra box office won't go amiss either! ;)

Sorry Becks but Lord of the Rings a risk?!

Due to the fact that the hype started a good two years before it came out, not to mention the massive budget and the strong fan base of the original books how on earth could it possibly fail?

Arun how can you say the Mercury is the worst? The Brits are by far more terrible!

Hey don't take that salute as a sign of respect

I'm taking it as a sign of devotion.

The only way I would ever watch the Oscars would be through the sight of a sniper rifle.

It's usually reported on the news...usually ahead of the report about the five year old boy hacked to death by his stepfather and aftre the report about Prince Charles' broken toe

I've never even heard of The Mercury. Although I gots to say that after seeing Jennifer Lopez's dress at the Oscars last year, I think music people really should just stay in their own award ceremonies. That was soooooo not appropriate for the Oscars!

It could have sucked is what Becky's saying I think. They could have splashed all the cash and gotten all the fans going "hey, that film sucks! How come it cost so much!"
