I personally can't think of anything more romantic than watching a film making light of a few thousand young men dying...I mean what the audience want is romance...if history gets in the way...just re-write it

What? Silk is expensive! If they're gonna insult your style, make them feel like they're fashion morons. ;)

EDIT: But you just ruined a perfectly good lie with the truth so never mind.

And let's keep in mind that Arun probably still has a pair of parachute pants at the back of his closet so...well, you know.

What I meant by 'risk' was that this movie could have been a total disaster ala 'Dune' another well loved/cult book that was turned into an 'interesting' film.

Let's look at the numbers for a moment - $270 million dollars were ploughed into said films. Now to make that kind of money back - the movie would have to do incredibly well.

Not only that but New Line are not a 'major' film company, if Lord of the Rings had been a failure, they would have ceased to exist - it, in essence, would have bankrupted them.

The main arguement is that to make this kind of money back it would have to appeal to two very disparate audiences. The 'geeks' (people who have read Tolkien and are generally into SF etc) and 'normals' (people who would not touch Tolkien with a ten foot barge pole and are more likely to know who's in Eastenders as opposed to who's in the Hobbit)

Remember - this is Tolkien we're talking about! It's a real slog to read at the best of times ;)

So, we're talking about nearly $300 million, a cult book which takes forever to get the point, a Kiwi director noted for bloody, wierd films and a cast of no 'bankable' stars. And in a genre that's notorious for generating really BAD films!

To you and me - that seems okay, but to the Hollywood suits, all of the above equals commercial suicide! They're not in the business of taking risks - they want to make money - lots of it.

I could go on for days about this but I'll wrap it up here - Lord of the Rings could have been a total catasrophe, but thanks to the faith and courage shown by New Line, Peter Jackson and his cast and crew, it's (hopefully) a trilogy that will take it's place next to Star Wars as the greatest films ever made.

    Passionate? No kiddin'! :D

Me three! Its never a good idea to argue with the Becky. :)

I have yet to see a lot of the films which have been nominated, but I really hope McKellen wins his category.
