I'm listening to Best of the Beast! First track now, the Number of the Beast.

Maiden are so good. Didn't "Can I Play With Madness?" feature Graham Chapman in the video?

Thing with Metallica is that for that genre, and at the time it was founded, it was striking and iconic and nobody can really do similar without looking like a ripoff.

It's also to me part of a set:

Then why isn't it featured on the front covers of their latest releases?

See, to me Zep's logo is their font. The stylised "L", "Z", at least to me, is more iconic of the Zep brand than the logos are because the font is front and centre of the band's artwork more than the logos ever were.

It's just that if you saw a t-shirt with just those symbols, you know it's a Zep t-shirt. There's almost no other bands I can think of, except maybe deftones with the white pony, that have that.

    Syntax error on my part.

I actually meant replace Metallica with Motorhead.

    Original post amended.

I'm still tempted to approach a 16-year old teeny bopper who happens to be wearing a Zep t-shirt to ask them a question about the band. If they go "what", i'll go Samuel L. Jackson on their ass.

I saw a kid yesterday wearing an AC/DC shirt. I thought "what is it about 30 years of identical songs is it you like" and then remembered at that age I liked Pantera, so my inner monologue shut up.

LostOnHoth - "Two. Minutes. to Miiiidnight. To kill the unborn in the woooooomb."

I like to go up to people who wear ramones t-shirts, and ask them what their favourite album is

Yeah Ramones and Led Zeppelin posers are rife. I blame Target or BigW for stocking these T- shirts with all of the other printed stuff.

Iron Maiden not only had a recognizable logo but also recognizable branding with the character Eddie.

I'm trying to think of another metal band with as iconic character in their albums/merchandise/stageshow.

lol.... who cares? They were a manufactured band, created to model clothing from Ian McLaren's "Sex" clothing boutique. They were, pretty much a boy band, no different from Backstreet Boys. They're about as punk rock as New Kids on the Block.

I like Jon Lydon and Public Image Ltd, though.

Any band that gets into the mainstream is manufactured. Want to know why The Beatles stopped wearing leather jackets and started wearing suits in 1963? Epstein told them to wear the suits. Every band that has chart success is as manufactured as One Direction because they need to be marketable. I even throw Korn and Slipknot into that category.

Yes, I knew that about Epstein. The difference is, yes, he suggested that they change their image, but the band wasn't specifically created to model and advertise a product. The sex pistols were like Ronald McDonald or Aunt Jemima. .

Also... lol at Korn and Slipknot.

Nope, I still stand by it. Korn and Slipknot enjoyed the mainstream success of the late 1990s and early 2000s because the nuMetal landscape made it possible for them to thrive. There's certain rules they had to adhere to if they were going to have that success, and they played them well.
