I would assume he's talking about how far along it is. Makes sense that they would try to focus on getting Smith's version polished first to try and get his participation secured.

I hope Smith does come back, but I think the real question on every ID4 fan's mind is; What about Mr. Robert Loggia?

And now Fox has done the smart thing and officially moved the movie out of the 2015 bloodbath match against Terminator 5 and into July 3rd, 2016- the 20th anniversary of the original's release.

They totally need to call it ID4 20. The pot jokes would be epic. ;)

Headline: "Independence Day sequel to be delayed until 2016". In other news, Bill Pullman resigned to an additional year of eating Ramen noodles.

I like the synergy of a 20th anniversary release. And if nothing else, Will Smith has an extra year to make up his mind.

I'm thinking Smith will most likely do it unless he finds another successful franchise in the meantime since After Earth bombed so badly.

Fox might also be willing to invest in Smith's paycheck now that the film is coming out on a more marketable date in a less competitive year.

Will audiences really spring for this movie? Is there such a wide ID 4 fanbase that's clamoring for a sequel?

    lol (open)
Why don't they just reboot it?

    :p

    And...

I think they're catching Smith at the right time for sure. He's reached that point that almost all stars reach in their careers where he has to return to a "sure thing" every now and then to help firm up his clout. I'd say he'll bite the laser bullet and sign on.

That's a fair question. The original was a huge hit, but that was two decades and a lot of cultural/pop cultural shifts ago. Those who were kids at the time may go out of nostalgia if nothing else. The sci-fi fanbase will go. But with not a superhero or vampire in sight, will today's kids be begging Mom and Dad to take them to see it? Time will tell.

Unfortunately, I can't really think of a sequel that came out over 10 years later doing really well domestically.

Smith pulled it off recently with MIB III, but that was just a smidge over a decade in between films. The Terminator franchise has always been 7-10 years in between chapters. But 20 years... Pheeeew. That's just a lifetime when it comes to stuff like this. Even with Smith on board this is far from a sure thing at the box office.

Tron Legacy is probably the closest thing as far as sequels coming out almost 20 years after their last installment. But it's success wasn't primarily box office-based. It was also a different beast (a more influential original that had to be reintroduced into public awareness vs a less influential but more widely-remembered original).

I think it could be okay if they explicitly go for the tongue-in-cheek again and at all costs avoid the suggestion this is a serious movie.

On the other hand, that's every single Roland Emmerich movie ever.

It didn't really find success domestic wise. It made huge foreign numbers though.

As long as it makes money, what does it matter if it's foreign or domestic?

Granted, if the 2016 launch date holds, ID4's sequel will be closer to Tron Legacy as far years-gap-between-sequel goes.

That it is. In many ways, I like it better than its sequel. I guess I just can't stand Kubrick's style.

Don't they explain all the WTF material from the original in that film? Or at least try to?
