I was going to say the same thing, although not necessarily Lando.

 

I was thinking the other day that—assuming the characters from the OT are indeed going to be in Ep. VII—they'll have to stagger their introductions a bit so that everyone has their moment. I instantly imagined whatever the conflict in the movie is bringing the gang back together again and that Lando would likely be somewhere running a business or in a casino separating people from their credits. Perhaps a few lovely ladies around him. I think it would be a neat way to re-introduce him.

 

I could see Lando as a politician. Not sure they'd want to go to that well too many times though if Leia is a Senator or perhaps even Chacellor.

I could also see Lando turning Bespin into some type of Las Vegas gaming resort with Ice Cream Maker guy dealing Sabacc.

 

A sport whould be cool!

And with the Empire defeated, maybe he'd hire some of his old Rebel friends as well. Perhaps Admiral Ackbar would run his own concession stand—"Ackbar's Snackbar".

 

That's actually a VERY good logistical point to make. All these "moments" that introduce major characters, they all take precious minutes of film time to set up and pay off - in a movie that will in all likelihood not be any longer than the others, and therefore clock in at about two hours and a couple of minutes. If all of the Big Three are involved, that means three such moments in one film, and if there are other characters involved (as there would HAVE to be), that means they would have to be introduced as well in their own moments. Let's assume three for the OT gang, and three or four for any potential ST characters. That's a LOT of introductory moments to have in a two-hour film that also has a lot of other things on its plate - and it has to get it all done in about two hours.

It's concerns like this that continue to make me question exactly how much involvement the Big Three can really have in the ST. In any scenario, if I was making this new trilogy and I had to choose between prioritizing the characters of the previous trilogy and prioritizing those of THIS trilogy - which would be the ones I OUGHT to be focusing on - then the Big Three would lose. Every time. As much as I like the OT gang, they're not the focus of this story, and cannot be. What people should be doing is speculating more about the newer characters and how THEY will be introduced; in all likelihood they will be the ones doing the heavy lifting in the ST. I'm not even sure they would have the time to introduce Lando into the proceedings when there are likely other secondary characters of more immediate importance to the story at hand to be introduced; it would be just adding a complication to a story that doesn't need one.

 

You make a lot of good points. You're right, the OT characters are not the focus of this new trilogy, but fans really want to see the old gang again after nearly 40 years, and since this is a handing off of the baton movie, they should probably be the first characters we see so that we can get that out of the way and get into the story and the new characters. Heck, I say after the opening crawl and the pan down yadda yadda you start aboard a ship where a door slides aside to reveal their silhouettes and then let them all walk into the light together Magnificent Seven style. The audience would go nuts, our character re-introductions are done and over with and we can go on with the story.

 

I wouldn't mind revisiting the Cantina. Would be awesome if Oola is still dancing/singing. Oh wait....

 

I wouldn't have chosen this thread, but I was actually going to present a theory in the near future that Lando could be the Supreme Chancellor.

 

I actually disagree. I think a mistake in writing the ST would be setting up HUGE introductory moments for the BIG 3. I think they (as in Arndt, Kasdan, Abrams) need to treat the Big 3 matter-of-factly in setting up the story NOT special moments. We should be re-joining their lives in progress and likely in action and not make a big deal out of it -- it will be that much more special. IF several characters are introduced simultaneously and it serves the story then that is what's best. And I can easily see Han and Chewie and perhaps even Leia all together. I think we're likely to see R2 and C3PO together etc....

I was thinking that they should introduce the new characters first in an unconnected pre-adventure, kind of like the Indy movies or the Bond films. Then as the characters move beyond that they interact with Han and Leia. I think Luke should have a staggered, big reveal. Kind of like Strider or something.

 

Skin the Ewok sounds like good family entertainment.
