I will give it that: one of the best mind-job endings in film. Up there with, "No, Luke, I am your father."

Agreed. I was thinking about this...

...in SF, there is always some sort of bad guy / warning theme prevalent to the Speculative Near Future genre. It was the Red Menace (or Nazis, in the old Serials), impending WWIII, nuclear doom, and in recent years environmental has been a big thing, but it seems like the big one for the last decade has been zombies. If there is a recurrent theme in Speculative Near Future stories, it is the zombie. While they are not SF, per se, as they are often horror, it feels like the zombie movie is THE Speculative Near Future genre of the last 10 years.

    Resident Evil x4
    28 Days/Weeks Later
    The Living Dead
    World War Z (upcoming)
    Day of the Dead 1-3
    Zombieland
    Dead Snow
    etc, etc, etc.

Be it viral, bioengineering, unknown, or biowarfare, the zombie flick, I think, has been our speculative fiction movie of the last decade.

Thoughts? Is there another major theme in speculative near-term future fiction?

I have nothing yet, but I must collect them all. Car-less at the moment, getting it repaired & beefed up before we drive it to Cali.

Didn't know where to post this, but here goes (same post as in MG forums):

'Tis the last of the vacation season! I'll be gone Sept 1st-7th, and guess where! Yep, back to Omaha! Moose and R2-Central gang has graciously invited me to their BIG two day droid build weekend. I'll be staying at his place getting AL working. Also some sightseeing. I've been to Omaha 6 times now and haven't really seen it (except the inside of convention centers and hotels). Also planning to visit the state capitol on way home. Maybe camp overnight at Lake McCaughnehy (I think that's how it's spelled). Any other places along the way I should see?

And the real reason for this post: I'm desperately in need of a cat sitter!! Got two older cats that need food, water, and attention! If anyone is willing to help out, pm me. I can't afford to pay the vet or any shelter $25-$40 a day. Just need someone once a day to feed and play with them for a bit. Thank you in advance for any help on this.
