I'm all for a female lead. JJ knows how to pull off female leads.

 

Would the gender of a character ever be taken into account thematically based on the plot or the problem represented by the antagonist? Symbolically?

 

I hope not I mean Abrams doesn't even respect woman in his movies what makes this different

 

This is a good question and it raises the problem of traditional approaches to mythology and contemporary views against essentialism.

Traditional views or some mythology might view a female character as a symbolic life bringer. Contemporary anti-essentialists would point out that this is no different than saying women are naturally more nurturing than men.

Anti-essentialism makes a distinction between gender and sex. Gender is a construction while sex is biological. As we all know just because someone is born a particular sex doesn't mean they will fit with their culture's gender constructions.

I personally would not be a big fan of essentializing a female protagonist in any contemporary film.

Well if it IS her, you can go all Super Saiyan in the movie theater thus terrifying the moviegoers who will then demand that the character be purged from existence.
