I have to admit to a certain scepticism here because, for me, superhero comics trying to cover real-life issues tend to fail and fail badly. Often "realism" = more blood, violence, darkness and nastiness.

I think that's why Asto City works so well: It doesn't ask 'what would superheroes be like in real life?' but 'how would life be in a world of superheroes?'.

I'd be interested to see at least one Star Wars novel or other substantive work (beyond, say, a short story or one-shot comic) where the main protagonist is non-Human. Sure there are a lot of side or second-tier heroic characters in the saga and Expanded Universe, but I personally don't know of any major stories or storylines that feature an "alien" as the central character. About the closest I can reckon to where a non-Human is on or close to equal footing—and please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong—is the titular character in Darth Plagueis, and that's if you're into villain protagonists.

Also, depending on how you define 'alien' huge chunks of TCW feature an alien protagonist both in the form of Ahsoka Tano, Cad Bane, and Asajj Ventress. Heck, even Jar Jar anchors a couple of episodes.

Ah, how could I have forgot Mercy Kill?

It was very, very enjoyable read, particularly with Piggy as the main character. If anything had to be Aaron Allston's swan song, this novel definitely fits the bill.

That aside...do not speak to me of TCW...

Allston also briefly gave us a Twi'lek point of view, with their cultural aversion to one leg hopping maniacs...

    Also Gotals too.

Breaking news on the Wookieepedia topic: Abel has brought it to my attention that there is a reference in Traitor to Jacen's "pubis". Someone get on that, huh?

Does it say what's between the man's legs? I don't think we can count testes as canonical...it could be anything up there.

We have some Ackbar POV chapters from Stackpole and Allston, which were the first of their kind, IIRC, for that character and the Mon Cal species in general. Great stuff and I wish we saw more of it.

Though wasn't the original question about novel-length works (as opposed to short stories of the Tales of the [FILL IN THE BLANK] variety—which are incidentally some of my favorite things in all SW literature)? Quoth Goodwood:

But yes, portions of the Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy would indeed count.

Well, but citing them as an example of novel-length SW works with non-Human protagonists isn't necessarily the same as recommending them, is it? Which may be part of the point: the SW literary universe doesn't just need more non-Human protagonists of substantial works, it also needs better substantial works featuring non-Human protagonists! :)

What about comics? Portions of Yavin Vassilika have a non-human POV. That's one of my absolute favorites, too.

Though would that count under his category of a "one-shot" instead? Or is a one-shot technically shorter still? 'Fraid I'm not totally up on comics lingo.

But yes, not to be a copycat or anything, but Yavin Vassilika is one of my personal favorites too. :)
