I've heard lots about how the new Independence Day is terrible (and it kind of is, but in a good way), but I haven't heard anything talking about how Dr. Okun totally has a boyfriend/husband and it's presented as totally normal and ...

The two of them face off against the aliens and the boyfriend/husband ends up dying and while I'm upset a gay person died I'm also kind of amazed they gave that kind of scene to a gay couple and it was super emotional and not played for laughs?

So yeah, A+ surprise LGBT representation, Independence Day: Resurgence! Here's hoping Baze and Chirrut took notes from them...but probably not.

 

Jeff Goldblum and and that were indeed about the only good thing about it. You know one of the things that actually annoyed me most was that they could have just cut Liam Hemsworth and Jessie Usher from the movie and given their roles to Maika Monroe, because it would certainly have improved the average acting quality and story.

 

If we ever need to create a second iteration of this thread, this must be its subtitle.

 

Yeah, there were A LOT of superfluous characters in the movie. The stuff with Whitmore and his daughter made me go "WEDGE AND SYAL" and I wish they'd done more with that.

 

Or better yet, give Hemsworth and Usher's roles to Monroe, and give Monroe's role to Mae Whitman.

 

Does Jessie Usher do the Jaden face? Please tell me he does the Jaden face.

In fact please tell me that his entire character is a Jaden Smith reference.

 

I don't have a lot of interest in seeing the new Independence Day film, but that is great news.

And with Star Wars movies coming out every year from now on I imagine we'll get some LGBT characters eventually. But maybe that will happen real soon, like in a few months time soon.

 

Sadly, no. The actor was not very good. Had none of Will Smith's charisma.

It's been three weeks with no activity! Where are my people?
With Trek breaking the glass ceiling with gay characters in big sci fi movies with Sulu now having a husband, I think there's a good chance Star Wars will actually take the leap into having a gay character on screen. Hopefully SW will do one better and actually have a same sex relationship on screen (as my understanding is that Sulu may not actually have any scenes with his husband, but I'm not sure)
I'm behind on my audiobooks but hope to start Life Debt soon and plan to listen to Bloodline (and I'm going to finally listen to Lost Stars which I've been iffy on but Bloodline sounds great and that's enough to get me to listen to Lost Stars for whatever links between the two books there are).

 

I thought there was supposed to be a shot with Sulu, the other guy, and their daughter, but maybe not...?
