Impressive.....most impressive. Do you know if they did the BAND OF BROTHERS mini-series produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg on HBO? I saw the promos and they had to have used some special FX for that.

    I´ve seen 80.
I think that they are not going to do all the effects of the matrix II, just some part or they were being consulted some aspects or something like that. i read it somewhere on the net but i can´t remember now.

On The American President when the president gives his address to a special session of congress at the end, the wide shot is a matte painting and crowd replication(like Forrest Gump). They also did a matte shot of Marine Force One landing near The White House. ILM made the scene, shot during the Spring, look like Winter with snow and such. For MMM Woody Allen had ILM digitally erase a phone lying on a guys chest.

The girl with the pink coat. ILM used digital image processing to pull the coat out and digitally colored her coat. They also did the candle flame at the very first using the same technique.

There are two awesome books on ILM:

"ILM: The Art of Special Effects"
    and
    "ILM: Into the Digital Realm"

Unfortunately these two books cover ILM's work only until 1996 (with a little insight into the "Star Wars Special Edition"). I hope there will be another one out soon, a lot has changed since then... but luckily, there'll be a book about Digital Domain (probably ILM's biggest rival in the business) out some time this month... finally another book about SFX (I have a lot of them).

Oh yeah, other resources are of course all "Making of" and "The Art of" books from Star Wars. Not to forget WWW.ILMFAN.COM...

ILMfan.com was down for a week or so, but it should start showing up any moment now as DNS changes propagate. I will put a more extensive ILM library listing as soon as possible. Right now is bare bones but that'll change soon enough.

But if you really wanted ILM after 1996, just get all the appropiate Cinefexes. The latest one is almost completely devoted to ILM (JP3, Planet of the Apes and AI). They are the best complement to the books. Maybe there will be another book, but since they cover about 10 year periods we would probably have to wait until 2006. Also of course check CGW.

Malducin! Nice to see the resident ILMFan "elder statesman" here. :)
Griffz, Cinefex is really the best source. As Malducin said, it has nicely written articles with color pictures. If you're an effects fan, you'll love it. Why do I know so much? I don't know that much. One thing that's important to remember is this: Regardless of what some people say about "CGI this" or "It's all CGI" just ignore 'em. There are more models being made, for more movies, than at any other time in movie history. Computer animation is just another great way, like all the others, for effects artists to create fantastic images.

It's strange, but regarding all "effect"-films of the past years, it's cheaper for filmmakers to use models instead of CG...

I'm not sure why that is... any ideas?

Well for one thing the CG route would involve more infrastructure. Practical models you can use commercial kits or they could use their own machines to build parts, which for the most part are cheap. CG models on the other hand require more resources, a desk, a workstation for the modeler (mostly O2s at ILM), the software package(s) (Maya, and any propietary software used for it) and/or create a maquette first and scan in in to be rebuilt, network connection and server resources, etc. But in general the salary of a skilled professional would tend to overshadow and hardware/software costs.

The really important question is when you use one technique or the other. There will be times when on CG models will do, there are other times when either CG or practical will do so you choose the easier and/or cheaper. Sometimes even practical models are the best way to go.

Dream Quest Images 1979-2002. DQI was co-founded by Scott Squires(now at ILM)and Hoyt Yeatman. They worked on several great projects over the years including: The Abyss, etc.
