FF:VIC I'm coming to Melbourne for the first time...

Hi, I'm from the UK and I'm coming to Australia for the first-time ever next week to work at the grand prix. I am looking forward to it incredibly!!!

I wondered whether anybody could fill me in on cool places to go/see/do etc?

I was also planning on spending some of my visit trying to buy some clothes (like Carharrt/Stussy/trainers/t-shirts - ya know hip hop/skater stuff) and I wondered whether there was an area of town that was particularly good for getting low-cost stuff.

Any help you could offer would be cool!

First of all, a pub crawl with those of us that are legal age (legal being 18 here) is a necessity.

There's a fair bit to do around here...I'd recommend the Queen Victoria markets for just about anything you want to buy, be it software, clothing, etc. Also, if you've got a free day or night off on the weekend, you might want to go to a football match. I'm sure other people here can suggest other things. Hope you have a great time while you're down here, the GP is always good fun. What's your job there?

 

Are you just staying in Melbourne, or will you be going to other cities aswell?

 

I'm a journalist for a British motor racing magazine - so I'll be writing all the news, interviews and reports during the weekend...
And I'll only be in Melbourne. I think I arrive on the 2nd and fly out on the 11th.

 

You MUST sample the food in China Town. Specifically the Shark Finn Inn and/or the Flower Drum.

Furthermore, a trip to Melbourne isn't the same without going to the MCG for a game of Aussie Rules Football.

 

Yep, I'd suggest a Friday night match under lights. Truly a grand experience.

Incidentally, what part of town are you staying in?

also, while your at it, at the moment they are running a free water taxi service along the yarra.....that'd be a good way to see some of the city

As a huge follower of the F1 season myself (as opposed to those who take an interest in the Aussie GP 'cause it's the in-thing during early March and don't give a rats about the other 16 races - damn heathens!!!), I'm always open to a bit of sucking up to gain entry in to the track.

Seriously though Dark_Score, you must have one top job. It would be such a buzz to get access into some of the exclusive areas around the races - I mean how cool is that!

Remind me to tell you guys the tale when I was able to get into a corporate box ABOVE the pits (looking over the Sauber team) a few years ago, apparently my day pass cost the company $600

I'll let you know what I'm doing when I arrive on Monday. But I think it's going to be a bit of a headrush for a few days. It's the start of the season so everyone's going to be flat-out...
