Not really a retcon- we're seeing what happens after his reign, really (and, who knows, maybe there are flashbacks to his reign in the film).

If it's any kind of retcon, it's a budgetary retcon. They always said COR was supposed to be part 1 of a trilogy, though they initially said the COR sequel would take them into the Underverse (which may or may not still be true- for all we know, the Merc planet thing may just be the first half of the film). I suspect if COR had done slightly better, they wouldn't have had to take pay cuts and such to preserve the R rating and actually get the film made.

According to BC, they're apparently saving the Underverse/Furya plotlines for a new sequel if this movie performs.

They've only said it will be released sometime in 2013. Given that its far enough long to get an R rating, I'd say either a pre-Iron Man 3 late spring release (going for a Vin/Fast type window of appeal) or early/mid August (like Chronicles or Expendables).

Will that Necromonger guy from Chronicles of Riddick who looked like Tri-Klops from Masters of the Universe be back?

Those tracker dog creatures? Maybe. Depends on the nature of any flashbacks or Necro scenes beyond Karl Urban's presence. It seems like the majority of this movie will be focusing on the mercs hunting Riddick.

Are the games consistent withthe movies in terms of continuity?

    I might try one out.

I loved Pitch Black. It was a tense and gritty little sci-fi thriller which made me realize how great Vin Diesel can be. Not a fan of the sequel. Could have been so much more although some of the concepts were interesting, and Diesel turned in another decent performance. Needless to say I am very very much looking forward to this. Oh and the games were awesome as well.

Yeah, Escape From Butcher Bay, IIRC, overwrote the original flash webcomic prequel to Pitch Black as the official backstory.

Assault on Dark Athena is an enhanced remake of Butcher Bay (due to the XBox 360 being unable to play the XB version of Butcher Bay) that includes the bonus Athena sequel campaign and some Pitch Black-based multiplayer (I think- I haven't played the games yet).

At first that sounded good, but then I remembered when I turned off the tv after hearing her and Bamber say frack, like every other word.

Release date has been set for September 6th, 2013 and will include IMAX.

That's... longer than I had hoped. It's also not that inspiring of a release date, but, then, the original film was released in a January dumping ground, so I guess one can look at it as the series returning to it's roots ;).

Hopefully it won't replicate Dredd's underperformance from this year (but hopefully it will be as great as Dredd was).
