"This painting was an experiment that started a year ago today. It began as a simple character study and grew into something much larger very quickly. I called it my 'frustration' painting--something that I would retreat to when I needed a break between commercial projects. I would never recommend painting the way I painted this to anyone interested in proper workflows or efficiency when it comes to professional work, but I found it to be a pretty fantastic exercise in recording my own progress and tracking my thoughts over the course of a year. It became something like a meditation and a tribute to the friends I've met and lost, and the life I've lived up to now.

These figures have been totems and guides of a sort for most of my life. They are at once both intensely personal and foreign to me. Much like revisiting old songs or poems at different points in your life and having them take on a new meaning or unraveling into something cool and exciting; there is always more they have to teach me. I've tried to abandon them now and then over the years, thinking of them as silly or stale, but they seem to keep cropping up in my work again and again like strange little ghosts. I guess it doesn't bother me quite like it used to--It is a lot of fun to see them morph and transform with every iteration as they move through life with me. It's been quite a ride thus far--filled with powerful moments and memories I will likely always struggle to unwrap and package into the words they deserve. So I suppose now it's time to part with this piece--I learned so much and of course there are still 1001 things that I want to fix looking at it now—but the time for that has passed. I send this to you now as my humble offering for a new year. I wish you great success, health, and happiness in 2018 and beyond.✌️
