actually, I kind of liked that touch.
but the Royal Guards were cooler, the way their masks covered their entire face was kind of mysterious and intimidating (i mean, look at Fett!)
not too mention their Lego figures are sweet...

I concur.

 

The Emperor's Royal Guard would absolutely slaughter the Senate Guard.

The Royal Guard are chosen from the absolute best of the best the Empire has to offer, and trained ruthlessly against the other candidates. To become a Royal Guard, you have to kill another candidate in one on one.

The Senate Guard aren't even in the same league, let alone the same ballpark.

 

And also according to the Dark Side Sourcebook, Force sensitive.

 

CoD also said that The Senate Guard was more for show then protection, and their rifles were a little too big to be very usefull (not something a highly trained force would use) plus they let some thugs get off a shot at Valurm. Plus the Republic didn't have a military inwhich to draw its guard from.

As a point of interest, which one of his sidekicks was Rune Haako? The one with him when he gets captured or the one Sidious refers to as a ''stunted piece of slime''?

 

The former. Daultay Dofine is the slime, and he truly becomes a grilled cheese sandwich when Anakin blows up the Droid Control Ship.
