What do you guys see in Obama's future if he loses? Will he leave public life more or less completely?

Don't most former presidents pretty much fall off the radar after leaving office? Bill Clinton seems to be the odd exception, but even then we didn't see much of him during the Bush years.

I can see Obama pulling a Grover Cleveland in 2016.

I've come across a few on my twitter feed that claim he's going to do a Palaptine in order to stay in office (maybe not in that exact phrase, but there are some who seem to think that Obama will make a power grab rather than hand the office over to Romney if he loses).

My head hurts, is it Tuesday yet?

Even if he wanted to, he wouldn't be able to score the nomination. Not after losing to Romney.

If he loses with a close enough margin and Romney's term goes as badly as I'd expect I wouldn't be surprised to see Obama be the second President in history with non-consecutive terms.

Who cares if the same unbelievably idiotic bad prediction was already proven wrong 4 years ago?

The Right's Big Theory du jour is that Obama's second term is going to be an all-out "socialist" assault on Our Values since Obama won't have to worry about re-election anymore.

That would be extremely difficult to pull off. I think he'd find another primary slog unappealing, and I'm not sure "This dude lost to Romney" would be an ineffective attack. Cleveland at least didn't have to go through primaries since, well, that was when smoke-filled rooms decided the nominees. They're non-smoking now.

It seems the National polls are starting to catchup with the state polls.

    Set your DVR's everyone!

    "A Must-See Hannity
Tonight, 9p ET: Election endgame! Palin and Preibus map out Romney's final moves to lock in a win!"

I don't get why the Right are psyching themselves up so much in the face of the evidence that Obama is probably going to win. It's just going to make it hurt that much more. If Obama does indeed win, Hannity's Wednesday episode is going to be hilarious.

Also, please, please, please no Electoral/Popular Vote split. The whining and sudden emergence of armchair scholars would just be horrible.

Yeah, neither guy is going to have a mandate if they are elected......an EC/Popular vote split would be a pain in the ass.

I wonder... should the forum do a poll of who you're going to vote for, or who you think is going to win?

Maybe the poll could even be added to this thread by a mod...

If OH went blue and PA went red, that would be weird.

Here's a cool video from NPR about 2008 campaign spending by state.

I am going back and forth about which candidate will get what states, but I do have a prediction: squeaker. This election will be much closer than 08.

When I've looked in on RedState, all they quote is Rasmussen, omitting just about every other poll.

If you think about confirmation bias, you have to look at its opposite, which involves shutting out anything that disagrees with your conclusion. The trouble for Republican true believers is that the election results are probably going to force them to deal with being wrong, though they'll soon shift gears into "fraud!" and other justifications for their mistakes, none of which will cause them to believe that they were ever actually wrong.

Quick note: Because of how big of a deal the election probably is, and how active it'll be watched, we'll have two threads operating in parallel. This thread will still be operating under Senate expectations discussing the election. So comparing the exit polls to the results, looking at turnout, and whatever sort of discussion/debate you want to take part in, this'll be the place for it. If you're interested in more of a... whatever the equivalent to liveblogging is on a forum, or sharing the pictures, the videos, the impending memes, and links to breaking news and your quick, immediate responses to that stuff, check out the thread here. Also going on now, lots of prediction maps now.

Everybody's welcome in both, but this will hopefully allow us to have two discussions, a more in-depth one on broader trends going on in the election, and a more conversational thread as well.

This was a stupid decision, Mike. Why overthink things like this? Just have the one thread that was already on its way. This isn't the JCC of the past. I'll keep my objections to that, but I just want to emphasize my strong disagreement with closing the thread GAJ opened while making clear that this is a textbook case of overthinking and overengineering.

We don't have the traffic to do what you want. All we need, and should have, is one discussion thread.
