The AT-AT kneels down, the door opens and they roll out a red carpet.

    Crossections offer a different explanation:

They abseil themselves, just like marines from Helicopters :)

They throw down a huge air mattress and they all jump onto it, yelling "Banzai!" and "Cannonball!", giggling like little children and filled with joy.

With parashutes, running out of the AT-AT's ass, yelling "GERANIMO"

Serious answer: I really don't know, and I think the abseil answer is the most resonable.

There is a door at the side, remember that Luke exsits it in ROTJ when he goes to see vader? And yes, they kneel down, so to speak, and exit the door.

I know they kneel down, but isn't there a hatch on the underside of the main carrage to offload troops and cargo?

All the above are right. On the battlefield the troops can exit in two ways. Depending on circumstances, they can either abseil through hatches underneath the walker, or alternatively, the walker can kneel down and the troops exit through hatches on the side of the walker and down gangplanks that extend from the body.

I think the real question here is how the heck they get from the star destroyers down to a planet?
they're a little big to stick in a shuttle, don't you think?

I know the destroyers in the PT land, but agian, in the OT they're a bit too big for that

There are special landing barges for the AT-ATs.

But getting the damn thing to kneel down would waste time...would the Empire really do this? I thought they had extendable ladders or lifts for the disabled ;)

Seriously, I figured they roped down ala modern day helicopters.

I too figured they roped down especially after Republic Commando and Revenge of the Sith
