After Indy is released in Japan in July, that foreign gross figure will go up substantially.

Hmmm not bad numbers. Most likely it's broken even and in the green, once you've cleared the marketing budget. Hopefully the lucrative franchise tie-in marketing will tip the scales and make strong suggestions for an Indy5.

    I think $400m was the break-even point.

Well, I'm pretty sure nobody's going to lose money on the picture, I'm inclined to agree with you it's well past the break-even point.

Just caught this story - there's no doubt Paramount is having a really good summer:

Paramount International Box Office Passes $1 Billion

    By REUTERS
    Published: June 16, 2008

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Paramount Pictures International, which releases movies outside North America, said on Monday it has topped the $1 billion mark at overseas box offices behind hit films including "Iron Man" and the latest "Indiana Jones" saga.

Paramount, which is owned by media giant Viacom Inc, said it surpassed $1 billion on Saturday, six weeks faster than in 2007 when the company ended the year with a total $1.6 billion at international box offices.

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," the latest installment of adventure archeology from Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, grossed more than $350 million internationally in just two weeks, the company said.

Likewise, "Iron Man" has taken in $210 million in markets served by Paramount Pictures International, and animated "Kung Fu Panda" has been another recent success for the division.

At least we know Crystal Skull will surpass the gross of Episode II: Attack of the Clones. It ended up making 649 million world-wide. A tidy sum six years ago. But Crystal Skull will blow past it. It's at 638 million as of today. And counting.

Just read that Indy had a huge opening in Japan; foreign total is now up to $392 million:

Ok so Indy has been out for 6 weeks and it is still the #7 movie in America. But what's really impressive is the staying power of the film. It is now ahead of sex and the city, the happening, and zohan. For crying out loud, the happening is a shamalyan flick and is only in it's 3rd week of release!!! Don't be surprised if Indy finishes ahead of the Love Guru next week, and if it gets lucky, the Hulk.

Um, yes, you're right I remember now. Of course, Batman had a huge novelty factor at the time, there had been no movie version since the ultracampy 60's show.
