Yes, and Spain and Portugal had Empires that spanned the globe. As did Britain.

It was only 5% smaller then the one the Empire had in it's prime.

That was during the Black Fleet Crisis according to this sourcebook. After the Yevetha ,Admiral Daala, and Admiral Pellaeon were defeated, the NR began downsizing it's fleet every year. They simply didn't feel that there was a need to have such a large fleet. So,it's about 20,000 strong by the NJO era.

Oh and the book also tells us how many warships were in the Fifth Fleet. It was about 500 strong.

 

Oh and it also says that some Senators wanteed to go the way the Old Republic finally did and get rid of the Defense Force completely.

Actually the Old Republic was great success. It had a vast military probaly as large as the Empire's.

Well, I can see how he would see the Old Republic as a huge failure, it having lasted for only 25,000 years compared to the Empire's stellar, what, 22 years?

Apparently that's what they thought. There are intel reports that say nothing poses a serious threat to the NR anymore. The threat that the Imperial Remnant poses is laughable.

The average citizen considers the Empire a past nightmare, a historical example of tyranny , a vanquished and vanished foe. Only a small percentage of New Republic recalls that the Empire goes on. There is of course no longer an Empire,but only fragments of the Empire-a dozen little Empires."

I assume that that was written before Daala and Pellaeon launched their final attacks on the NR.

Nope. The NR is still stupid.

 

The concept of the NR isn't stupid - its just that the leaders couldn't get elected mynock-catcher in S. Florida.

 

I mean that most of it's elewcted officials were stupid.

 

The New Republic was formed by people who wanted the Old Republic back, by people who lived during the time.

People like Mon Mothma. They were from the Old Republic so it is not surprising that the New Republic would follow the ways of the old.

Like all governments the NR is eager to tell its citizen that war is over and that no more of its brave soldiers will have to die. It is because of this that they can't see past the last threat. Look at current governments, since the COld War they have been steadily downsizing their militaries. Eventually you get to the point when you are attacked and you are so weak that you cannot do anything about it.

The thing that most surprised me about the New Republic is that it didn't bar Jedi from its Senate. After the fact one Dark Jedi managed to take over and form a empire ruled with fear...
