I recently had a brush with insanely discounted books at a San Antonio book store. At first I couldn't believe the price and thought it was mislabeled, but sure enough when it came up on the register, it was correct. Take a look-

The Unifying Force (Hardback)- MSRP: $27.00 / I Got For: $1.00

The Last Command (Hardback)- MSRP: $22.00 / I Got For: $1.00

WEG Thrawn Trilogy Sourcebook- MSRP: $25.00 / I Got For: $2.00

WOTC Arms and Equipment Guide- MSRP: $21.00 / I Got For: $2.00

Needless to say, I was one happy kid :D

Anyone else have a similar story?

I got SHATTERPOINT for $3.00 from the USED/NEW books for sale from Amazon.com (it was New). The shipping cost $4.00, but it was cheaper than paying the cover price at a bookstore. You got a great deal! :)

The best part was that TUF was in perfect condition and was just sitting on the Clearance shelf with a $1 price tag on it...

I got the hardcover copy of Balance Point for $2 + $4 shipping, but I think it's foreign, due to its smaller size compared to other hardcovers and lack of pricing on the inside jacket. Otherwise, though, it's fine.

I bought a hardcover TUF on half.com for $6 with shipping. Turned out it was one of those miniature editions as well. It had no CD, and was a couple of inches shorter overall. It seemed unabridged, which was okay by me.

Ah, makes sense. Cheaper to produce and easy to distinguish from "regular" copies.

Yes, those sound like Science Fiction Book Club editions. I have a few in my own book collection.
They are smaller but they are unabridged. If all you want is the story then they are fine. However, if you are collecting for future appreciation (such as first editions) they are not as valuable as the original editions.
My own 'good book value' came when I first decided to read the NJO books back in 2002. One of my local bookstores here in the UK had all of the NJO paperbacks published at that point on a 'buy one, get one free' offer so I got the whole bunch in one go for half-price.

I got a great deal on eBay once - eighteen WEG RPG books for thirty pounds. I went over to a website that had them all individually priced and worked out that the lot would have cost between £150-£200 pounds if I bought them separately.

Needless to say, I was a very happy bunny :D

No, the UK versions are actually slightly larger. I have a US version of EOV: Rebirth and it's smaller than the rest of my NJO paperbacks.

I'll go into a book store and find every now and again that someone has sold off their entire collection of Star wars books. I already have them all usually.

I have slowly been buying all of the NJO at Wonder book and Video, the USA Today's top ten used bookstore, for half price. I got Splinter In The Mind's Eye for free at the Lord Fairfax Community College Library Leave one/take one rack.
