Did you know that the holochess scene in ANH was a homage to Ray Harryheusen's Sinbad?

No, but that definitely makes sense. Those hologram claymation creatures do look like something out of a Harryhausen movie. And on the AOTC DVD(I believe) they mention how the arena scene at the end is an homage to Harryhausen.

I'm cringing at the thought that someone is going to suggest replacing the chess game with CGI.

Those claymation monsters are so out of date, I hope ILM make them CGI for the DVDs.

I doubt they'll switch them with CG. I like the Special Editions and CG and all, but those claymation holograms are classics.

Yeah. Since they're not real monsters, it doesn't matter if they don't look real, really. The hologram technology in the GFFA isn't perfect. If it was, Leia's message(for example) would look as though Leia was really standing there.

RD1000 this can't be true for the simple reason that EOTT came out *the same year* as ANH, a few months later, actually. Dough Chiang even mentions that somewhere. So, sorry, but no cigar.

so was it Ray who copied Lucas or was it all 100 % coincidence that in both films a baboon/monkey like crature (Wookie) plays chess on a ship on a long voyage to pass time ?

It's a 100% coincidence. No one copied anyone else. They would have been hand animating this stuff in extreme isolation (both Tippett & Harryhausen worked alone & unaided at this stage) at roughly the same time so one couldn't know about the other. Sorry.

you don't have to be sorry. That's just your opinion. If you are George Lucas though, do tell us ;)

People playing chess to pass the time is hardly an original idea.

    Here, check it out:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076716/

It's impossible for one to have copied the other.

that dosen't prove anything. both films were in production at the same time. in fact, the minotaur
in sinbad was played by Peter who played chewie.

Knowing Lucas' habit of "paying homage" to other films, he mustve included that scene.

ray might have been contacted to help with stop motion
as Jabba was to have been a stop motion puppet in ANH

Dude, you're grasping @ straws! There was *no* contact between Lucas & Harryhausen during the production of ANH. The only person who did stop motion & wasn't a part of the fledgling ILM who was asked about vfx @ the time was Jim Danforth, who was not involvd with S&TEOtT. He was asked about blue screen & rotoscope work, not animation, anyway. You're seeing things that aren't there.

But if it makes you feel better to see 'references', 'homages' etc. in everything even if it's impossible, if that enhances your experience - enjoy!

    But for the historical record:
    You Are Wrong.

hey no offence, but were you working for LFL during the production of ANH?

    If so do tell me.

    And for the historical record

    Its only your opinion ;)
