What are some examples that you know of for coincidences in sports, especially over an extended period of time?

for example, the Los Angeles Rams made it to their first super bowl in 1980, and they beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to do it. Nineteen years later, as the Bucs made their first NFC title game appearance since then, they played none other than the Rams (now based in St. Louis). Both games were low-scoring (7-3 and 10-7) as well. The Bengals made it to the Super Bowl twice in the 1980s and played the 49ers both times, and the Rockets made the NBA finals in 1981 and 1986, and had to face the Celtics both times.

What others do you know of?

Like a team called the Patriots "magically" winning the Superbowl in the wake of 9/11, and now the Saints "magical" run in their first year back in the Superdome? I try not to be cynical, I just observe.

So if the Patriots go up against the Saints who should win?

The Pats and Colts seem to always square off in the playoffs.

Karma worked out in the end: it's not as if the Knicks became a dynasty or anything.

The Kentucky Wildcats played and beat the Utah Utes in three straight NCAA tournaments. Then, in 1998, the Selection committee saw fit to put the two teams in different brackets. Utah, consequently, made it to the Finals, only to be beaten by the Kentucky Wildcats.

since 9-11 there has not been a championship won by a NY team. The Devil's don't count in this because they are the New Jersey Devils.

Heh, it's all Helmut Jahn's fault. Architects should always honor local traditions. :p

And the PSFS building was shorter than City Hall and William Penn?

Coincidences in sports are great. I'm looking forward to all (new) coincidences. :D

Sadly I just know one for the last football World Championship, which hasn't become reality. :( So, I think it doesn't count. ;)
