I have recently found a conciderable amount of cash in a small brown paper bag, and have decided that with this money I would like to buy me some Hi-Speed internet.

I am sure it comes as a shock to everyone to learn that I am still on 56K. Granted I am probably the only Gamer here who is, or maybe even the only one still living.

Unfortuantelly where I live Cable is not available, or more so, costs so much I couldn't eat for a few months if I were to buy it. So I am left with DLS.

Are there any problems, internet gaming wise, with DSL? I mean more so than with Dial-up(if that is even possible)?

DSL is cheaper and decent enough, from what I hear. There is now satelite broadband from DirectTV you may want to check out.

Thank you Bib, I forgot about that. It would be a possibility, concidering I already have DirectTV.

Though I looked into it and it has some draw backs.

DIRECWAY utilizes satellite technology to send and receive the Internet to your computer, making it available everywhere in the contiguous United States. While satellites give you high-speed Internet, the distance between our satellite and your dish does produce a micro-fraction time delay or ?latency? during transmissions, which may not be perfect for ?twitch? games or online trading that need split-second reactions. So, if you?re a big online gamer or utilizing a VPN, DIRECWAY may not be ideal for you.

This is what I was talking about. If I have DSL will that disturb my gaming?

I was also looking at Verizon DSL. A friend has it and said it was pretty good.
I checked out their site, and have yet to find any warnings like Directway's service and internet gaming.

Ah, I did not know that about Directway.
Anything is better than a 56k.

As a DSL line is usually 1.5 mbps downstream, this should be more than enough. If you can afford it, though, I'd think about getting as much upstream as you can (depending on your distance from the central office, you could probably get something like 385 kbps up), especially if you're thinking about hosting anything like FPS or space sim (XvT/BoP or XWA) games.

I'd go with DLS over DSL anyday man.

oh, 56k here too. But in a few weeks I'm moving in with JP and we'll get broadband... not that I have time for gaming anymore :(

You're moving in together? Did his hot Latina wife kick him out for not gardening well enough, and now you two are getting a bachelor pad? If this truely is the case, I'm going to feel really bad about joking about it.

What is going on? I was on Verizons site today and they check for availability in my area, and I had it....then. Now when I check it says it isn;t available in my area.
So did my house suddenly move 100 miles without me knowing?
I know for a fact a tower was put up in my town. How did it switch so fast?

I also don't understand the price of DSL between Verizon and Directway. Am I missing something?Verizon is amazingly cheaper.

Yes I have established that much, but what equipment would I need that I don't have?
I have DIRECTV already, and that already has the dish.

You think you've got problems? I've only got 28.8 dialup.

To get ADSL, you need an enabled phone line exchange (no towers), an ADSL modem, and a computer. To use with more than one computer, you need a router.

Satellite is more expensive because it's more expensive to run. At least here, you don't get discounts for already having the relevant equipment.

To think that most people stopped downloading things at 3K/s over 5 years ago. Blargh.

People are still using dial-up? What is the matter with you? I have Comcast Cable, and they keep upping our connection speeds for free. It's great. About a year ago they doubled it, and just last month they increased it by 33%.

My usual download speed is now about 400 kb/s.

EDIT: A buddy of mine had a 14.4k modem until just a few years ago. It was pretty sad how excited he was when he finally upgraded to 56k.

I have Comcast too, I recommend them. It is always up and they don't install a bunch of filthy software like other internet companies.

I prefer my campus LAN, but at home I have good ol' comcast.

My dorm's LAN sucked PB's balls.

They purposefully limited our download connections to about 60 kb/s.
