    Disclaimer: All Star Wars characters that are "originals" belong to George Lucas. I just use them for my personal pleasure. Master Healer Han'yaie and Jedi Master Kyran Josel belong to Layren, so please ask her first before you borrow them, like even I have to do. Thanks.
    Dedication: To Layren, who wanted very much for me to write another Qui-Gon fic, lol. She also helped throw a few of the opening quips in chapter one into the fray. Thanks for all your support, Layren!
    Summary: On their departure to Coruscant, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn become captives for a random political statement towards the Jedi. Each is infected with a different mysterious and contagious illness. Can they discover what they have in order to find a cure, or will both they and the entire population in the Jedi Temple die?

    Chapter One

    The dark-eyed man stared thoughtfully out into the distance as he sat in the massive control room of his conclave. His faithful followers were constantly monitored on each of the numerous holocams stationed throughout the complex. Sometimes he liked to just sit in the control room and watch them work, letting their active movements lull his tired brain to new ideas.

    That was how he had come up with this brilliant plan to strike at the Jedi. They thought they were so safe in their Temple on Coruscant. They liked to meddle in other people's affairs. He would see to it that they learned how to keep to their own business. But he needed conduits for his plan. It was impossibly hard to catch Jedi unaware, and totally impossible to capture more than two at a time. All of his records showed that Jedi currently out on assignment were constantly surrounded by others, so launching his plan was becoming harder to do.

    "Doctor Sinclaer?"

    The brooding man picked up his comlink and answered the summons. "Go ahead, Jenkanes."

    "Doctor," his aide came back quickly, his words nearly tumbling out of his mouth in his excitement, "we've found them! We finally found them! The plan can go ahead as scheduled! At your word, I have a team ready to gather them to us. Just say the word."

    He frowned. "What are you speaking of, Jenkanes? Who and where?"

    There was a slight sigh. "We found our messengers to the Jedi! A team, one master and one padawan, is about to leave the neighboring planet of Nevien where they have been negotiating peace talks. If the team leaves now, they will be able to pick them up and we can begin as we planned."

    Sinclaer smiled, a cold movement of lips that did not meet his eyes. "Perfect. The word is given." He waited a moment for Jenkanes to relay his command, then asked, "Do we know their names?"

    "A moment, sir." There was the sound of rapid typing on a keyboard. After a moment, Jenkanes replied, "It is the Jedi team of Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, sir."

    The names did not register in Sinclaer's mind. He did not know of these two Jedi, and it was of no matter to him. All he needed was the proper, trusted conduits of his message. These two were as good as any if he hoped to succeed in his plan.

    "Let me know when they have arrived."

    ~~~~~
    The peace talks had been successfully concluded, all sides were happy in the ending result, and now it was time to return to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. With one last wave to a small Nevien girl who had attached herself to him during their week stay on Nevien, seventeen-year-old Obi-Wan Kenobi fell into step with his master. Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn walked briskly down the corridor that would lead them to their transport and Obi-Wan had to hurry his stride to keep up.
    With a bemused smile at his master, Obi-Wan nonchalantly commented, "Well, Master, it seems we finally managed to complete a mission without being captured, tortured, burned, cut, threatened, or nearly dying. I almost don't know what to make of it."
    Qui-Gon turned his head to stare at his padawan in disbelief. As he did so, he noticed several unnatural
    "Obi-Wan, you might have spoken too soon," the tall Jedi quipped, his eyes watching for any movements.
    Obi-Wan shifted into a stance that could either be defensive or attacking, and gripped his lightsaber firmly. Without looking at Qui-Gon, he defended himself. "Spoken too soon, maybe, but I don't stand corrected just yet."
    A tall man in a white coat approached them from a side corridor. "Hello, Jedi. I have come to take you to someone who wishes very much to give you a message. Please follow peacefully."
    Still wary, Qui-Gon lowered his lightsaber and motioned for Obi-Wan to do the same. Once they fell into step in the center of the wraith formation, he leaned slightly over to whisper in his padawan's ear, "What was that you were saying?"
    [face_idea] Why don't they just mark the message, "RETURN TO SENDER!"
    This sounds like a great challenge for all of the Jedi, as well as a great story! :D
    I can't wait for more! [face_batting]
    Chapter Two
    To both Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon's surprise, they found that their trip to their new destination was very short: the neighboring planet of Hunadar. Obi-Wan glanced over at his master and slightly flexed his fingers in his Force cuffs to test the sensitivity of the beam. At the small movement a jolt of electricity shot into him and he left the cuffs alone?for now.
    Qui-Gon was watching their captors, looking for a hole or a lazy guard, anything that could eventually mean their freedom. Ever since boarding the private and lavishly decorated ship, no other words had been spoken. Qui-Gon didn't mind that between himself and his padawan?they didn't need words to communicate?but with their captors it indicated a level of proficiency that began to worry him. Escaping would be much more difficult with professional soldiers.
    A slight bump and a hiss indicated their arrival on Hunadar. The man in the white coat reappeared from the direction of the cockpit and gave the two Jedi a tight lipped smile.
    "Welcome to your new home, gentlemen," he told them, the mockery evident in his tone. "I do hope you enjoy your stay." He nodded and the ten wraiths split up between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan.
    Obi-Wan found himself herded off the ship, down the ramp, and toward a corridor that led to the right. Craning his neck to see what was happening to his master, he noticed Qui-Gon being taken to the corridor that stretched off to the left. Plainly, they were being separated.
    //Master?// He queried in his mind through their bond.
    Qui-Gon's mental voice was calm. //Just tell me what you see as you go, Padawan. We'll find a way back to each other. They must not know much about Jedi since they have allowed us to keep our sight.//
    //Or they don't care because they're going to kill us,// Obi-Wan shot back wryly.
    //Come now, Obi-Wan,// came Qui-Gon's reprimanding tone. //What kind of defeatist attitude is that? If we thought that for every time we found ourselves outnumbered, separated, and in trouble, we'd have died at least twenty times by now.//
    Obi-Wan fought to keep a smile from his face as his shadow guards marched him along the featureless hallway. //Well, so far there aren't even any doors in this corridor, but I am coming up on a bend toward the left?//
    //As I am, but to the right.//
    A wraith scowled at him and suddenly reached out to shove him into what appeared to be solid wall. Obi-Wan braced himself to cushion the impact with an unyielding surface?and fell flat on his face as he passed through the wall.
    //What?// He cut off the thought as he looked up to find himself staring into the barrel of a blaster.
    "Keep talking to your Master, little one," a man's rough voice growled at him, "and you go no farther alive. I am monitoring your brain waves and I will know if you speak to him again. Do you understand me?"
    Obi-Wan nodded once and tried to ignore the rapid questions he was hearing from Qui-Gon in his head. He didn't know for sure if this man could really tell if he were speaking with his master, but he wasn't going to try to call his bluff until he knew more about the situation he was in.
    "What do you want?" he hedged. "We haven't even been to your world. What do you want with us?"
    The man was older than Qui-Gon, graying at the temples, but distinguished and wearing a white coat similar to the man who had met them at their transport. He lowered the blaster, tucked it into his coat, and motioned for Obi-Wan to stand. Once he had done so, the man then escorted him to what appeared to be a table that was standing on its end with straps hanging from it.
    Obi-Wan let himself be pushed against the table and hooked securely, all the while gazing about him to learn more about why he was there. The room was large, filled with machines that hummed, and various liquids. Along one wall was a row of cages filled with the same sort of animal that appeared to be in differing stages of some kind of illness. The first quadruped shook his head continually, as if it wa
    You would, wouldn't you Qui? :p
    "Oh, no, I?m a one-of-a-kind who learned the art of sarcasm from my master," Obi-Wan responded, trying to twitch his arm away from the nearing needle. The table gave him little room to move. "Go ahead, tell me the message. I'm all ears."
    Yep, that's Obi :p Learned from the best at sarcasm didn't he ;)
    Qui-Gon swiftly caught his footing in the large room and saw at a glance all the machines and cages filled with animals. Some animals were whimpering, some were in convulsions, and a few were completely still, though they breathed and gazed at him with what appeared to be pleading in their eyes. Pleading for what, he wasn't sure. Escape? Release? Death?
    Or, all of the above? [face_worried]
    I think that Obi-Wan had the right idea--just tell him the message, and he'll deliver it! ;)
    But, that would be too easy, wouldn't it... o_O
    Chapter Three
    Obi-Wan was pushed through another invisible door and into a dimly lit room that housed two bunks and a small alcove for privacy needs. The bunks were made with soft blankets and the pillows were neither too hard nor too soft. The privacy alcove even had a thick blanket to drape around it so that none could see in.
    A muffled curse sounded behind him and he turned to see his master catch his footing in the dim room. Like himself, Qui-Gon's Force cuffs had been taken off and nothing restrained them now. They even still had their lightsabers.
    Obi-Wan raised an eyebrow and gestured to the bunks. "Quality accommodations. Are they stupid, or are they arrogant?"
    After his own quick look about the place, Qui-Gon gingerly settled on one of the bunks and stretched out. "Well," he responded ruefully, "either way this unsettles me. They seem to be the perfect hosts?if you discount being injected with a strange red substance. Doctor Jenkanes even informed me that they would make us whatever it was we were hungry for since we missed our dinner."
    Confused, Obi-Wan sat down carefully on the remaining bunk. "Master, this is all so strange. We?" Then something Qui-Gon had said hit him and he frowned. "Wait, what color was the stuff they gave you?"
    "Red. Some liquid that seemed to freeze my veins as it passed through them." The Jedi Master propped himself up on an elbow as he faced his padawan. "Why? Was yours different?"
    Obi-Wan nodded. "Mine was blue, and it burned like fire. I felt like they were trying to melt me from the inside out."
    "Different colors?different shots?different?substances?" Qui-Gon mused aloud. "That could be. Doctor Jenkanes said they wanted me to deliver a message."
    "Me too!" Obi-Wan interrupted, his eyes wide. "But Doctor Sinclaer never told me what it was. He just injected?" Suddenly he caught on and he groaned. "Wonderful! I've become a messenger with some unknown?thing inside of me!"
    Qui-Gon gazed at him a moment, then sat up. "Well, I think they've done what they wanted to do with us, so if you're hungry we should let them know."
    "How do we know they won't kill us or poison us?"
    His master quirked a smile. "They've given us something we can't fight at the moment?what else can we do but eat and try to maintain our health and strength?" The tall Jedi turned to knock on the wall where the door should be.
    In a very short amount of time, the man who had met them on Nevien appeared. "Yes, Master Jinn?"
    "You mentioned something to eat, Doctor Jenkanes?" Qui-Gon informed him. "We'd like to take you up on that offer, if it's still good."
    The doctor smiled. "Yes, of course. I'll have someone bring you what Doctor Sinclear is having."
    In what seemed like no time at all, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon were sampling a richly flavored local meat with topatoes and a red fruit called a tomato. As they ate, Obi-Wan thought back over everything Doctor Sinclaer had, and had not, told him. One thing kept nagging at him, a word that he did not understand, and he finally asked Qui-Gon about it.
    "Master, do you know what an 'internuncio' is?"
    Qui-Gon stopped eating and stared at him a moment. "Where did you hear that?"
    "Doctor Sinclaer called me that after he injected me with whatever that blue liquid was," he explained. "Do you know what it means?"
    His master continued to stare at him; no, not at him, but through him. "It makes sense," Qui-Gon murmured. "It makes perfect sense."
    Obi-Wan felt like he had been shoved into a dark cave. "What? What does? What does it mean?"
    Qui-Gon's eyes focused again on him and the older man's lips pressed into a thin line. "An internuncio is quite simply a go-between?a messenger, if you will. But it means so much more than that in the context of what has just happened to us.
    "Obi-Wan, they want us to go back to the Jedi Temple. Don't you see?"
    The padawan shook his head, though his thoughts raced and he wasn't beginning to like what he suspected.
    This is a wonderful story! :)
    With a bemused smile at his master, Obi-Wan nonchalantly commented, "Well, Master, it seems we finally managed to complete a mission without being captured, tortured, burned, cut, threatened, or nearly dying. I almost don't know what to make of it."
    :rolleyes: Obi-Wan, you must learn not to speak too soon. ;)
    "Perhaps, but perhaps not. You still do not yet know what you each have. Once the symptoms begin, you will have lost a little of your resistance, a little of your strength and power. Past a certain stage, you will be helpless to resist what I wish. Then I will place you on a transport, send you to Coruscant with a distress beacon, and you will spend your last days in the Temple knowing that I have achieved my ends after all. Have a good night's sleep, Jedi."
    [face_thinking] Hmmm... I wonder if there is some other reason why the doctor hates them so much, besides his employer's frustration. This seems almost too personal for him. :D
    Amazing work!
