JCC Is a married person looking at an unmarried person?

Let's see if JCCers are smarter than Grauniad readers, 72% of whom got this wrong.

Here is the question...

Jack is looking at Anne, but Anne is looking at George. Jack is married, but George is not. Is a married person looking at an unmarried person?

Vote for one of the three options.

And for the record, I got the correct answer, and then immediately thought I had the wrong answer.

There's going to be some stupid explanation for this, but no, there isn't enough information. The variables haven't all been declared, so there isn't enough information given. A married person is looking at a person, and a person is looking at an unmarried person, but Anne and Ann haven't been declared. I'm sure there's some smart ass answer that makes people who googled it so they could vote on the right answer feel smug, but I don't care.

 

i already did this on fb and got it wrong so i know the right answer and therefore answered it within this thread correctly. ha

If you said there isn't enough info, epic, you're not wrong.

This is framed as a yes or no question, but the answer is not yes or no, it's if-then.

 

Anne and Ann are two different people So there are two unknowns, as Luigi has pointed out.

If Anne is married, then Anne (married) is looking at George (unmarried), so the answer is yes.

If Anne is not married than Jack (married) is looking at Anne (unmarried)

Unless Anne is of some third category

 

yes cus if anne is unmarried then jack is the married person looking at an unmarried person. and if anne is married she's the married person looking at an unmarried person.

The answer is yes.

 

If married/unmarried is a boolean state, then yes.

i.e. if Anne is unmarried, then Jack (married) is looking at an unmarried person while if Anne is married then she is looking at unmarried George.

If 'divorced' or 'in a civil partnership' etc. would fall outside of the set of 'unmarried' then it can't be determined.

Sure, if one wants to over complicate it. I mean, can also say we don't know if any Jack, Anne or George are even people, therefore it's undetermined.
