Is it Gravy or tomato Sauce?

so, what do you guys call the stuff you put on your spaghetti and pizza?

Gravy or Tomato Sauce?

 

In the UK gravy is made from meat juices and a thickening agent so Tomato Sauce it is

... although that more often refers to Ketchup.

tom sauce, definately. Gravy would just be weird.

 

Just like ObiJuan said. Gravy is what you put on turkey. Anything you put on pasta is sauce. Take it from someone who's FBI...Full Blooded Italian (sicilian to be exact).

Tomato sauce for sure is what goes on pasta. Gravy goes on turkey and assorted other meats.

And Gravy on beef = Teh bestest.

 

Then you should know that in Italy they do call it gravy. I know full bloodied, off the boat Italians and they all call it gravy.


It just depends on your up bringing on what you call it. Depending on the company I keep, I can go either way.

 

I HATE gravy on chips

The only thing i'll have on mine is salt, pepper and vinegar.

 

I have a wierd food related phobia IF I have chips I like mushy peas but god forbid they put in ON the chips I can't bring myself to eat it... everything has to be separate

 

I'm exactly the same, but with Spagetti or beans, the only peas i like are garden peas, and only then if they have been covered in vinegar first so i can hardly taste them.

Nah, it's not about soggy I actually don't mind stuff like beans on toast... just some things I can't stand 'touching' each other... ie if someone gave me two flavours of ice cream in the same bowl... couldn't eat it. If I have a Sunday dinner kinda thing, put the gravy on the veggies and Quorn by all means but put it on the stuffing or the potatoes and it freaks me out

 

I thought I had already settled this agrument, but let me reiterate. Keeping in mind my word is law.


The stuff that is on Pizza is "Sauce". Sauce is made from mixing two products called Pizza Sauce and Crushed Tomatoes.

The stuff on Pasta is "Gravy". Gravy is made from mixing two products called Tomato Paste and Crushed Tomatoes.

As a chef I will tell you the beses of the two are EXACTLY the same ingredients except the seasonings and herbs are different in the Pizza base and the Pasta Sauce.

If you ask for gravy on pasta over in the UK you will get brown meat gravy that goes with cooked meats!

I've never heard Antonio Carluccio refer to pasta sauce as gravy nor any of the other Italian chefs I have seen on TV / worked with.

 

Justto set the record straight here, it's not gravy, it's not tomato sauce, it's not pasta sauce, it's Pizza sauce . Pizza sauce has the uique taste that pasta and tomato sauce do not have. Pizza sauce is it's own seperate part of tomato sauce.

 

More to the point, is it that important?

Now I believe there was mention of Pizza?
Is it being handed out yet or have i missed it?
