    Thanks!

Yes, indeed. That aught to be a Star War rallying cry. Goddamn Star Trek! Goddamn Star Trek! Goddamn Star Trek!

Except we have to go back before the SE's, since Lucas himself began making changes almost right out of the gate. Mostly back then it was audio alterations and editing choices, but he's always been tinkering with the OT, before he was able to change the effects shots that he had issues with and what not. Most of us didn't know he made these changes, but, he was doing it then. And before Lucas began doing the SE's, we had his best friend Steven Spielberg put out "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind: Special Edition" in 1980. Lucas may have made it popular, but the blame isn't solely his.

But these changes were so tiny (I'd say negligible) that I find it difficult to remember them all, IMHO there was really not that much worth to write home about.

But Spielberg has made all the different versions of CE3K in equally palatable quality available - and Lucas did not.

Doesn't matter. Lucas changed his films after the original release. That's been his M.O. since 1977. You can try to say it is negligible, but the bottom line is that he altered his films. This was nothing new. The only difference is that in 1997, it had a big marketing push.

Yes, in 2007. Before then, only the SE was available for the longest time on VHS. Then the 1990 version with both which was available until 1993 and then was discontinued for years. Then in 98, he had his Collector's Edition which had another edit of the film until 07. Lucas did present both versions of the OT on DVD in 06 and were both available on VHS in the 90's. He just didn't go that far for the Blu-Ray release.

An interesting point. From a perspective of gun harmonization, the torque on the upper cannon, in a gravity field, such as flying low over a terrestrial planet, will pull the barrel down and pull and stretch the overlapping field of fire back towards the fighter. In the microgravity of space this would not be a concern, and might be a feature in terms of mass conservation, not a bug. But sending those TFA X-Wings into the ground level atmosphere would do as you say. Maybe a defender of TFA can provide that it was a desperate measure?
