I've been thinking about this a while and I think it's not crazy to think that the Emperor could have survived being tossed down the reactor shaft by Vader in ROTJ.

I know some will say "but you saw the big blue flash! He'd dead!" but I'll put money on him making a return in Episode 7 (or maybe 8).

    Thoughts?

As I recall, he exploded, and then he exploded again.

    But who knows.

You see what you think is an explosion, you don't see him explode though do you?

I mean, why did GL have Vader throw him down there? Why wouldn't Vader just cut him in half? It always bugged me that he chose to do that, but if you think about it maybe he was leaving the door open to have him return?

He asploded. Unless the new villain is Evil Sith Dust, I don't see him coming back.

You're going to catch a bunch of crap from people for even suggesting this but in your defense I'll point out Luke had his hand chopped off in Empire and took quite the leap down the same sort of shaft. I read something online were a guy actually had diagrams, we're talking charts and graphs, of the Death Star.....he had mathematical equations and models showing the explosion was way too soon for Sidious to hit any core reactor. After reading it I sat down and thought....this dude is REALLY into Star Wars...and I just spent ten minutes reading it.....oh my, what does this say about me (I thought). I've been single for almost a year now. I think this is the problem. In short, I could support some sort of Sidious role in the new film but it would have to be done in a way that makes me think..."oh ya, I can see that....ya." Kinda like light speed and light sabers you know...coz they're real.

There is a recurrence of people falling in these movies:
    -Luke falls down Cloud City
-Lando and Boba Fett fall into the sand pit
-The Emperor falls down the Death Star II
-Darth Maul is sliced in half and falls down a hole

The lightsaber duels in particular have dramatic sets, which at least in TPM, TESB and ROTJ feature giant holes that characters fall into. He fell, he blew up. It was a fitting end to Palpatine's story. He was able to manipulate everything else, but he could not control that father/son relationship. It would be such a cop-out to bring him back as the villain. His story is over.

When the major bad guy dies (conveniently) off screen you have to wonder.....anyone got a good reason why Vader didn't just chop him in half?

don't forget the death star exploded....so...even if he survived the fall, I don't see him surviving the ensuing battle station destroying explosion and vacuum of space...

that said there's no reason we couldn't see some force ghost stuff with him....i'd rather see someone new though...

How old is Ian? Don't remember his last name?
His spirit could have survived. It did in the EU supposedly.

We can also make the case that Boba Fett can come back as well.

Well, Yoda and Luke did the whole radio or force call to buddies with a ship to pick them up, or this happened:

Maybe that big blue flash thing was some kind of Force teleportation power... it would be kind of a cop-out, especially considering the movie;s been out for 30 years now...

    Sweet. Jesus. Just no.

Let dead characters lie. You hear that, Episode VII writers? Be creative and come up with a new villain instead of resurrecting an old one from impossible odds.

To TCW writers you do not listen.

That flash actually signified that he time travelled.

Unfortunately, he travelled to about 7 seconds earlier.
