I don't know, I feel that if Palpatine returns it will cheapen Vader sacrifice among other things cheapen the ending of the OT. I am not closed to the idea, but if they aren't having him played by the same actor then that has my thoughts spinning with doubt. He needs to be really creepy and evil if he returns, not some young stupid actor who can't speak very well.

just like Plagueis returning would cheapen Palpatine's ascent to mastery

If the Emperor wasn't a Sith ROTJ would have been a much shorter film if that was the case.

Has anyone thought of the possibility that Plagueis and assiduous are one and the same? Another one of those 'from a certain point of view' things?

    WHAT IF

This rumored "ancient fear that makes Pazazzu look like a ******" deal actually means that Senator Palpatine was just a human host for the spirit of Darth Sidious?

Palpatine is dead. There will be an "Emperor" in Episode VII, but it isn't Palpatine. People who think it's Palpatine don't pay attention to the movies, which are CANON, when making up their bogus click bait.

Here's where Palpatine dies in Episode VI. That blue stuff flying up out of the shaft? That's not the "dark side escaping his body" or some other crazy EU theory...

The blue fire effect is the same one used around the core of the Death Star:

It's a forcefield or some other form of energy. Basically Palpatine fell into a giant bug zapper and was fried into nothing-ness. There was nothing left to arrest Luke on Endor, unless Andy Serkis is playing a charred corpse.

Problem is - Palpatine just doesn't fall fast enough. That chamber has to be more than 50 km away from the north pole of the Death Star - and Palpatine only falls for a few seconds.

You also don't see a body, it's like everyone here hasn't ever seen a film where you think the bad guy is dead then it turns out he's still alive?

I can't think of a Star Wars film without the Sith and with Vader dead and Sidious dead then how would they exist in the ST?

I suppose the bad guys COULD be just fallen Jedi, or some sort of witch thing but it just doesn't seem very likely to me.

We all know that the character called "Sidious" prior to the Windu duel is Plagueis and that Palpatine killed him and took his Sith name sometime in between Grevious's chat with "Sidious" and the opera scene. ;)

Palpatine will return in the form of a Sith Holocron. But not as an actual living Emperor. Plus, perhaps he was training another apprentice secretly to overtake Vader?

Well, it wouldn't be a bad idea if they came upon a holocron showing Palpatine secretly training someone else in order to bring Palpatine back in some way while also giving a quick background for a new character.

If Emperor Palpatine does not return in the ST, it won't be because "he died and thus cannot return." It'll be because someone made a decision in the past couple of years that his involvement would not be best for the story. With no body, the idea of cheating death, and Palpatine being viewed as evil incarnate, the door has been opened for the character to continue terrorizing the galaxy. Plus the original idea for the ST involved dealing with the Emperor. Not to mention Darth Maul somehow survived his fall despite being cut in half.

Episode 7 doesn't even have to answer this question. They could completely ignore it and he could still return in Episode 8 or 9 because everything has already been established and set up. But if he does or doesn't show up, they can still work with new villains. Perhaps one closer to the level of Vader.

I think it all depends on the execution, if explained easily without too much mucking around then it'll be fine.
