An interesting theory from Ryan Britt in an article at Tor.com: he speculates that a large percentage of the citizens of the GFFA may be functionally or totally illiterate: http://www.tor.com/blogs/2012/10/mo...r-wars-galaxy-are-probably-totally-illiterate The guy makes a couple of small factual boo-boos here and there, and one could argue about to what extent he may be right, but his core theory is fascinating, and deserves some thought. Maybe one of the reasons that Palpatine was so able to manipulate the population of the Republic was that most of them were illiterate - again, either totally or functionally - and, having gotten most of their history, political education, and news from the Holonet, simply weren't sophisticated enough to see what he was up to. Illiterate people are, after all, much easier to control. And maybe that explains why so many Republic citizens seem to know very little about the Jedi and even less about the Sith - they simply haven't ever opened up a history book and read about them. Something worth thinking about...
