The Republic as seen in The Phantom Menace is corrupt and suffering from weak leadership. The New Republic (from what we can gather in The Force Awakens) seems weak and reluctant to stand up to the First Order. So is it really worth the effort of the Resistance to carry on fighting? What do they hope to achieve - yet another weak Republic which dominates the galaxy?

Well it seems a hell of a lot better than the alternative.

The one in the PT wasn't worth fighting for, but let's chalk that up to writing incompetence.

What if tomorrow the war could be over? Isn't that worth fighting for? Isn't that worth dying for?

The Republic may well be the worst possible form of government... with the exception of all the alternatives.

I think it would be interesting to learn more about how the Republic functions/ed in TFA as compared to the prequels since there aren't any more Jedi peacekeepers. I always got the feeling that the Jedi Council having so much power was part of the old Republic's corruption.

I think systems need to become self governing. This whole collective nonsense always seems to blow up in everyone's face.

That's a good point about the Jedi Council, they came across as arrogant and blind to evil.

The New Republic learned from its mistakes. Don't let Gungans get involved in the political process.

Seeing as the New Republic crumbled so quickly, it may have been better for galactic stability if they just let the Empire win in the OT

The resistance is resisting the FO and their potential to rule the galaxy and less on trying to keep the NR in power.

That's why they're an offshoot and not an official arm of the NR.

Vehgah, they already tried that in the Old Republic. Didn't work very well.

I don't necessarily think it's about preserving the Republic so much as stopping the First Order.

Without the Republic, any would be conqueror like the Empire, the First Order or the Trade Federation would annex the independent worlds one by one.And there is the problem of slavers and pirates raiding the less developed worlds, privateers assaulting ships and making trade lanes unsafe, business cartels obstructing free trade and creating monopolies in order to economically exploit people...etc.

If you take a look at the movies and TV series, the main fault of the Republic is its failure to fix injustice and oppression in worlds far from the Core, but those problems won't magically dissappear if the Republic dissolves. The Hutt will keep oppresing Tattooine and Hutt Space, the Zygerrian Slavers, the Thalassian slavers and the Karazak Slavers Cooperative will keep enslaving and selling innocent people, the Black Sun will keep producing deadly drugs, people like the
Yam'rii will keep attacking people like the Kaleesh to steal their planets, monsters like the Yevetha will keep launching genocidal campaigns against their neighbours, the Kubaz will keep murdering and eating insectoid species like the Verpine and the Killik, the Ortolan and the Talz species will keep being forced to work in the mines like slaves...etc..

Doesn't look like it. The Old Republic was corrupted over centuries and seduced into becoming an Empire over decades. The New Republic woke up all groggy before being blindsided by an evil organization that they for some reason were not surveying.

The NR does without a doubt have flaws, the OR weak and corrupt, the NR , maybe a little too pacifistic. I get the point of the question considering the history in question but the alternative is awful and oppressive.

I haven't seen enough of the new Republic to judge whether or not it's worth defending. But, when one considers how much General Hux despises it for being the opposite of his First order, and when one also considers that Hux is a racist facist and a mass murderer under the heel of the Dark Side, theeeeeen yeah. The New Republic's probably not that bad.
