Is this a Northern thing

I am in Philadelphia. I called a restaurant to order takeout and a rude gentleman answered (I guess Philadelphians might call him "brusque" or "normal"). I said I wanted to place an order for takeout. "For pick up, you mean?" Yeah, sure, pick up. Then he asked what kind of dressing I wanted on my salad and I said vinaigrette, "You mean oil and vinegar?" YES THAT'S WHAT VINAIGRETTE IS. DID HE JUST BUY A THESAURUS? WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?

Then he said "Fifteen" and hung up on me. I didn't even have time to say thanks or bye. Should I assume that's the number of minutes before my order is ready or the cost of my food?




Edit: The thought just occurred to me that it might be a social norm in Philly to end every conversation with the title of your favorite Taylor Swift song, since she is a PA native, in which case I know neither how long until my food is ready nor how much it will cost me. Also I didn't have a chance to say mine which is good because, frankly, I'll never be able to choose.

 

Throw a battery at him when you arrive. That's the Philly way.

 

I don't mind when people seek to confirm that they have understood my order.

Is there really a big enough difference between "take out" and "pick up" that it needs confirming?

Sometimes "take out" is delivered to people's homes.

 

Um, no, take is taken out, delivery is being delivered,

 

It's possible that a person would ask for "take out" and expect delivery.

 

While being in Philadelphia is undoubtedly the root of your problems, ordering a salad is also problematic.

 

I'm going to be in Philly in mid-February. That's all I have to contribute.

 

The standard first question from a pizza shop here is 'pick up or delivery?'. The poor salad drone was obviously confused by the change in terminology.

He didn't even say pick up or delivery! He just said the name of the place! If he had said "pick up or delivery" I would have known to repeat back "pick up" which is what I learned after getting burned not ordering "take away" in England.
