I am in Philadelphia. I called a restaurant to order takeout and a rude gentleman answered (I guess Philadelphians might call him "brusque" or "normal"). I said I wanted to place an order for takeout. "For pick up, you mean?" Yeah, sure, pick up. Then he asked what kind of dressing I wanted on my salad and I said vinaigrette, "You mean oil and vinegar?" YES THAT'S WHAT VINAIGRETTE IS. DID HE JUST BUY A THESAURUS? WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?

Then he said "Fifteen" and hung up on me. I didn't even have time to say thanks or bye. Should I assume that's the number of minutes before my order is ready or the cost of my food?

    :(

Edit: The thought just occurred to me that it might be a social norm in Philly to end every conversation with the title of your favorite Taylor Swift song, since she is a PA native, in which case I know neither how long until my food is ready nor how much it will cost me. Also I didn't have a chance to say mine which is good because, frankly, I'll never be able to choose.

Throw a battery at him when you arrive. That's the Philly way.

I don't mind when people seek to confirm that they have understood my order.

    I am from the North.

Is there really a big enough difference between "take out" and "pick up" that it needs confirming?

At least he didn't ask where you were taking it out to.

    I am in Philadelphia.

This is where you went wrong. Everything stems from this.

    Amazing.

Have you run across the Italian Stallion yet? Do me a favor, and punch that Rocky statue, if you happen to make it by there.

Sometimes "take out" is delivered to people's homes.

It's possible that a person would ask for "take out" and expect delivery.

While being in Philadelphia is undoubtedly the root of your problems, ordering a salad is also problematic.

I've never heard of "pick up." It's "carry out" or "delivery" here.

And what would "vinaigrette" be other than oil and vinegar?

    Back to December.

I'm going to be in Philly in mid-February. That's all I have to contribute.

The standard first question from a pizza shop here is 'pick up or delivery?'. The poor salad drone was obviously confused by the change in terminology.

The average Philadelphian doesn't know what 'brusk' means. The standard take out phone receptionist is trained on the following protocol: Answer with a slurred, yet swiftly delivered announcement of the establishment's name (no salutation is given... just "Pat's!" or whatever the name is) and the simple words "pickup or delivery?", with the occasional "whatcanIgetcha?" bandied about for some variety.

I agree with the battery throw. You'll get treated like a local if you try to blend in.

Also, if you get the chance, hit a drive thru near HUP and reiterate that you'd like your order "to go". They love to hear that.

As for the "15 minutes"... depending on the accent, you are sometimes left wondering whether it is 15 or 50, with nobody to clarify, since they hang up as soon as humanly possible.

When I whine you and dine you on Monday, we'll eat at a place on fourth that is operated with clear communication and proper manners. It's foreign owned & operated. Gotta get you away from the mercy of these local Philistines.

He didn't even say pick up or delivery! He just said the name of the place! If he had said "pick up or delivery" I would have known to repeat back "pick up" which is what I learned after getting burned not ordering "take away" in England.
