Seems there was an offhand mention of this in an interview on IGN back in November, and now they've followed up with these very small tidbits from Nintendo head Satoru Iwata that were published by a Japanese newspaper.

-The product will "enable fun and movement not seen before." He added: "I expect it to become a third pillar, next to GameCube and Game Boy."

-The product would be unveiled at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2004 in LA this May.

-Company representatives have previously confirmed that it would not be a full-blown successor to any existing hardware.

-They'd like to have a world-wide release for it, if production capabilities allow.

Any thoughts of what they could be up to?

Don't be dissin' on the Power Glove!

To quote from the seminal film of 1989, "The Wizard":

"I love the power glove. It's so bad!"

"Yeah, well, uh, just keep your Power Gloves off her, pal, huh? "

    The Power Glove was cool.

The Virtual Boy gave me a headache.

I only played the Virtual Boy once @ Blockbuster.

    Nothing really special.

This I am excited about though. :)

I see only one possible answer: Nintendo has created a system completely dedicated to DDR. Doesn't explain the "fun" comment, though.

It will probably be like Sony's webcam thingy they have for PS2, but a type that actually has a use. They had that thing on display in Best Buy a month ago or so, with that game where you swat ninjas out of the air like flies. It was hilarious seeing people try it out. :p

It would be nice if was actual support for online play, though.

    crazy little buggers, yeah. Ninjas.

Of course it probably wont' have a use. I haven't seen any game that actually needs the GBA's functionality. Nintendo tries so hard to make that thing an integral accessory, but it's just not so.

Take Four Swords Plus for example. The only thing the GBA does is make you play the levels on the GBA screen while the overworld map is on the TV screen. No reason at all to do so.

First, yes, it's a GameCube game. And secondly, all it does is to seemingly ruin a great gameplay experience with four players by requiring all four players to own a GBA to be able to play it.

Whatever happened to just using GameCube controllers?

You can tell I've become a cynic. :p

'...Regarding the new product, Iwata says "We'll announce the new product in America in May. We use the phrase 'A product of a different nature' to describe the product, but the idea that anyone who plays it will find it interesting remains unchanged." He finishes off with, "It should be a hint to the next generation of hardware. This will be the year that we put up a serious fight with this new product." '

I'm guessing something involving portable minidisc playing, simply because of the PSP.
