'Irish' is the biggest 'ethnic minority' in the UK at present - I think it's about 6%. I'm not sure whether that's just the full irish (born in the RoI or has both Irish parents) or people who are 1st or 2nd generation (like me - Irish Dad, English Mum - very weird kids! )

So why the hell not? And why not celebrate Paddy's day? Remember - Northern Ireland is still part of the UK - Paddy is still their patron saint too.

MoTs_Minx - a possible reason as to why the Scottish and the Welsh and English don't make such a todo about Saints days... Religion. (Hear me out please )

The Anglican movement is very against the 'deification' of saints and the celebration of all saints days. You will note that all saints are cannonised by the Catholic Church, not the CoE or Protestant churches.

Maybe I'm wrong - maybe I haven't heard it right... but that's my understanding of the whole situation.

My family celebrate it in a small way - I pull out my Irish Rugger shirt and the family exchange Paddy day cards with those who aren't at home. Yes, we're British citizens, but that doesn't mean we can forget our roots - does it?
And I'm sure that's what our American friends are doing...

 

They do go a little overboard though...

They need a patron saint of subtlety

 

It might be to do with religion. But I don't care...I celebrate St Andrews Day...even though that was the saint "given to us" by the English and not our REAL patron saint!!!

Does anyone know how St. Joseph became the patron saint of Sicily and why Sicilians celebrate his feast day with a massive table filled with enough foods to feed an army?

Either way, the Welsh, Scots and Irish still celebrate their saint days more than we English do. Fecking PC bar stewards and their "can't have a flag up cos it might offend" attitude...

 

Well done Becky. He drove the snakes out of Ireland. you'd be surprised at how many poeple celebrate ST Patrick's day and don't know that.

My recommendation to you all is to read "the English" by Jeremy Paxman.

On the note of not forgetting your roots, that's all well, but a lot of people who celebrate St Patricks day have only a tiny link to being irish. And they only remember it one day a year. Not saying that about your family though Becky. And I still love your sister's name.

I would love to go over to Boston for Paddy's day - especially with my dad. Ai me!! The Bostonians are a lovely lot - but I have more Irish in my little pinkie than most of them have in their entire bodies!!

Dad came over 40 years ago - most of their Irish relatives went over 140 years ago!

Not quite -- more like making an offer he couldn't refuse.

There was a drought in Sicily and the people were starving. They prayed to St. Michael asking him to intercede on their behalf to obtain rain. After receiving no rain, they kidnapped a huge statue of St. Michael from one of the Churches, broke off his wings, and threw him into the ocean.

Then they turned to St. Peter for help. When it didn't rain, they took his statue, put a rope around his neck, and hung him from a tree.

Finally they turned to St. Joseph and along with their request, they told him what they had done to both St. Michael and St. Peter and warned him his punishment would be just as great. If he did obtain rain for them, then from that time on, he would be their patron saint.

Needless to say, it rained and the drought ended.
