They are called "cameos". Just about every movie has a cameo of someone in it.

no it didnt hurt my enjoyment but it didn't help it either.

I heard the guy who played Porkins went on a smack binge and ate himself to death at a Toledo Pizza Hut in 1987.

 

Then why does it matter? It's all in good fun. Cameos such as these are put in mainly for the fans to find. There's a reason why TF.N has pages dedicated to Easter Eggs and why the Insider talks about them all the time.

I'm pretty sure over 90% of the people who see the movie have no idea who those people are. If you asked them "Who is Rick McCallum", most of them wouldn't know, let alone know that you could see him in the one scene.

They're called cameos and Easter eggs. Films, particularly the Star Wars films are littered with them, and they're there for the more observant audience member. It's just a way of rewarding the viewer, and there are probably a whole ton of in-jokes in the films that we'll never get. I think you're taking it too seriously.

 

Ya really have to look for ET. I mean I didn't notice him until my third viewing. How many other regular people, ie non-hardcore SW fans, went to see TPM multiple times? How many go to sites like TF.N and find about all the easter eggs? You have to know where ET is. He'd be very hard to spot, like all the cameos have been, if you didn't know about them first.

Finally how many non-SW fans even know who Rick McCallum is, let alone what he looks like?
