    I for one do not appreciate this objectification of Diggy. He is not just a body for you to ogle. He's a person with feelings!

    Of course, you'll have to post a picture of what you get. Especially if it's a euro model for all us Americans to wish we got here in the states. Unless it's a 3 cylinder. You can keep that. ;)

    Passed my test today and spent the afternoon car shopping. Test drove three - a Mazda 3 (not on my shortlist, but ticked some boxes), a Honda Civic and a Ford Focus.

    Went for the Focus in the end - it was well under budget and really nice to drive. 2008 titanium, the 100bhp not the 115, sadly. Deposit paid, they're going to give it a service and a new MOT, pick up next week. I'll post a pic when I get it.

    Thanks again for all the help!

    Congrats on passing your test and on the 'new' car! I'm afraid to ask how high the insurance bill is since you are a new driver..

    Cheapest fully comp was just over £600 but I'd have had to fit a device to track speed etc. **** that. The one I'm going for is £650 fully comp with courtesy car. Although a new driver I'm about 400 years old and have an 'excellent' credit rating, so the prices aren't crazy.

    Congrats! How confident were you during it, and how stressed were you beforehand? I ask because it took me 4 months after my 16th bday to finally muster up enough courage to take the damn test.

    I Are The Internets I was pretty confident, to be honest. I ride a small motorbike so I'm used to the roads and I probably took more lessons than needed due to a long waiting time for the test. Not much stress before but I felt exhausted afterwards; it was a really tough route.

    I got lucky when I had my test many moons ago - the test center was in the next town so I was fairly familiar with the roads. This was out in the Heathrow area so not too close to central London. And I had mine before the written part came in - I just had to answer a few questions from the examiner. I already knew how to drive (I had a US license) - I just needed to get the UK license.

    slightly_unhinged - I had a 2010 Focus before my VW. Good solid German car. Well made, and not from cheap plastic and cast iron as the badge suggests.

    Next time I'm in Blighty we'll have to drive it round and yell at Polish people or something similarly blinkered, insane, and shall we say, paranoid?

    Just picked it up. Don't worry - got in and edged it forward after taking the photo. Not 100% on this parking malarkey yet.

    slightly_unhinged, well done! That's the model I had.

    As I recently took a job as a senior union official, I decided to spend my first month's paycheque - which was for about (I'm translating from AUD here) £200,000 from salary, £450,000 from bribes, brown paper envelopes, and things I stole from employers that I then sold - on a Bentley. It'll look nice next to me council flat.

    It's very easy mate, you could do it too.

    Take workers in an industry that will be automated in the next 5 years;
    take their dues, from their hard earned salaries;
    Strike deals that further price them out of the market so they can keep affording your salar... dues;
    Intimidate employers with the threat of a strike;
    Shut down any talk on retraining, and
    Lift anything not bolted down at a site.

    This simple list is your window to wealth gain.

    That sounds super.

    What I'd really like to do, however, is gain control over a tube maintenance contract, grant the contract to a bunch of crooks for a huge backhander and watch the whole thing go down the toilet so I can cry "Look! Privatisation doesn't work!"

    That would be jolly.

    When I get my Bentley I'll be sure to give it a go-faster stripe and hang some furry dice from the rear view mirror.
