I'd love to know what Interstellar Relations Theory (the equivalent of International Relations here) looks like in the Star Wars universe. The universe is nothing like the Western nation-state system that developed in the last few hundred years and on which IR theory is based, but there are still different "nations" - although one of them (the Republic/Empire) dwarfs all the others put together, there are still a few "independent" entities (the Tion Hegemony, the Hapes Consortium, eventually the Chiss Ascendancy and Imperial Remnant, possibly the Corporate Sector whose status is ambiguous) that aren't under its control. What do the debates in that field even revolve around?

And for that matter, Political Science - and political ideologies. With the intense polarization in the run-up to the Clone Wars and right afterwards, there have to have been some intense debates between different schools of thought promoting what would eventually become Separatism and Loyalism. The Empire, of course, probably lavished a lot of money on political theorists promoting the notion of a galaxy run on their ideology. Etc.

So many books I'd love to read the Star Wars version of. "Das Kapital," "De L'Esprit Des Lois," "The Social Contract," "Leviathan," "The Prince," "The Art of War," Plato's "Republic."

 

Yeah I've always wondered what a Star Wars equivalent to Marxism or liberalism or libertarianism looked like. as for Interstellar Relations I would imagine given the size of all the powers involved its a cross between the cold war/ and how the colonial bigshots in the 19th century dealt with each other. Speaking of nations have we ever encountered a planet that wasn't politically united? Most sci fi planets have the United Earth Trope with one government it would be cool to encounter something where nations still compete but have access to hyperdrive.

 

Neither of these really work, though, because one of the players - the Republic/Empire - is so far above the others. It's more like if there had only been one superpower during the Cold War years, or only one colonial empire during that time period

Huhhh... Well, Adumar. Although it's only beginning its space exploration stage - I don't remember if they even had hyperdrives when they discovered the broader galactic community.

Alluded to but not seen, the Renatasian system from the Lando Calrissian Adventures was also a bunch of nation-states before the Empire leveled the place. Klyn Shanga and his pilots are said to come from a bunch of different countries, some previously hostile.

And then you've got all the planets where control of the planet is in dispute, like Haruun Kal, though it's debatable whether that counts. (Are the Balawai and Korunnai different "nations" or different factions of the same planet?)

 

In Han Solo Adventures: Han Solo's Revenge - on the planet with the fluidic circuitry, Han alludes to them still having nationalism - and their weapons being at the nuclear-tipped missile stage.

 

There's also Melida/Daan which didn't end up unifying until a few years before the Clone Wars
