how does this picture make you feel?

(unfortunately this test may be culturally bounded to people with significant experience in the united states and other societies with a tipping culture)

Newport Beach? Like anyone there has a more "real" job than a waiter. I guess speculating in real estate and living off your parents' trust fund count as real.

Come to think of it, GOB probably wrote on that receipt.

What if the service was really, really bad?

I'm generally reluctant to judge a situation harshly based on a single piece of data, out of context. I can imagine a set of circumstances that might prompt someone to display that level of douchebaggery. That said...the circle of the tip, the passive aggressive note, combined with the 1% tip is so over-the-top that I can't help but hope he get killed by a falling toilet seat from the ISS on which someone had scribbled "Karma's a bitch".

I was ready to agree with Souderwan up until the toilet seat.

If the service is lousy you write "the service sucks", not "get a real job". In fact if this guy thinks that waitering isn't a real job, maybe he should think about what sort of service he'd get if there were no waiters.

What if the toilet seat merely wounded him? Or..oooh! What if the toilet seat broke the hand that wrote the "tip"? That's be awesome, right?

I'm not that sort of wisher of things. I tend to non-violent. Now, his paycheck accidentally losing two places and being 1% of what it should be? That I could get behind.

Side, we really should make it so that servers actually get paid by their employers rather than all this business of relying on tips.

Exactly. I don't even do that much...when my service is lousy I just put a big "0.00" on the tip line.

There was an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry kept bringing his orders to the back and then picking them up on his own (I think. I know for sure that he picked them up).

    Servers really aren't necessary....

They're not. And I go plenty of places where servers aren't needed. However, it's something I like when eating at some places.

Why? I think it can be a great system if managed properly. A good friend of mine works at a fairly upscale restaurant and is one of their best servers. He consistently brings in excellent tips well above what the restaurant would be able to reasonably pay him. His problem is the community pool that his tips go into that they evenly divide as he often feels like he's subsidizing poor performance from the same people every night. 'Course, the non-wait staff need some love too, so there's not a whole lot to be done.

Thank you! I was worried no one caught the reference.

Dammit Evan, you can't lead with the first part of that and then ALSO go ahead and make the AD references. You're supposed to leave that open for someone else. Setup, joke. That's how it works. I thought we were friends [face_plain]

What if you work your way up to Mr. Manager?

    THERE.

Oh, hey, yeah. Maybe it's just the angle that's throwing me off. Or the fact that it's 2 AM.[face_tired]
