"1337" speak is a strange language. It started as something which was easier to type for gamers, shortening words and phrases, e.g. "omg" and "ur lame", then evolved into substituting numbers and characters for letters, such as "1337 4|m|nG". PoT's version, or dialect, of 1337 is perhaps the most convoluted and strangest of them all, as it is actually the most difficult to type, defeating the initial purpose of the language. The language itself is designed to be intimidating to "n00bs", or newbies, people who are new to gaming and make a couple of mistakes. The number/letter substitution dialect remains the most popular, as it strikes a balance between ease of typing and intimidation and confusion tactics for the uninitiated.
