I don't think the extra runtime will a problem for people. Most people I spoke to about the film said "it was long, but it never felt like it".

Who cares what "some moviegoers may feel"? You can't please everyone. This release will be for the fans. Count me in.

This will make your jaw drop. It's made nearly 2 billion OVERSEAS ALONE.
World wide, it's way past 2 billion.

    Avatar Box Office Total

I'm sure once the project broke even, Cameron splits a hefty percentage of the profits with the studio, so yeah, I'm sure he wants it to make as much as possible.

The George Lucas, Peter Jackson school of milking it for all its worth. You can feel Avatar fatigue and 3D fatigue starting to settle in the bones, like rheumatoid arthritis.

Count me in. I'm normally not a fan of extended cuts, since there's usually a good reason the scenes were cut in the first place, but I have faith in James Cameron. I couldn't imagine watching the shorter cut of T2 ever again.

This year for the first time since the Titanic era 12 years ago, Cameron was on the Forbes list of wealthy people in the entertainment industry because he pocketed 210 million dollars from Avatar. So far. I wonder how many sequels he will make?

He's expecting to gross an extra 100 million dollars in ticket sales with the now confirmed August 27th release.

I only saw it once in theatres, so I'll probably go back for at least one more viewing.

Yeah, apparently it didn't make enough the first time through.

Gee, I sure hope they finally manage to break even.

I'm looking forward to seeing it on a full IMAX screen if it hits Lincoln Center again with this rerelease. Missed it the last time there, only saw it on liemax and Dolby 3D screens.

Now you've done it. I'll have to track that down and watch it. [face_mischief]

I guess the thread title no longer applies. ;)

Every one of the extended cuts of Cameron's films have been superior to the shorter ones (except maybe Titanic- haven't watched that one enough to fairly judge the differences, though David Warner gets some more screentime, which probably qualifies as "superior" any way you cut it... ;)).

If Avatar had Johnny Depp in it, she'd be the first in line. :p Not that there's anything wrong with that.

There is no "extended cut" of Titanic. Just deleted scenes.

Huh, I thought there was- I must be confusing the extensive deleted scenes then. Been too long.

Ooohh, I've never seen any of the Titanic deleted scenes. That sounds interesting.

They're on this DVD version: http://www.amazon.com/Titanic-Three-Disc-Collectors-Leonardo-DiCaprio/dp/B000ANVQ0K/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1278954575&sr=8-4

They total about an hour's worth of footage/extended scenes.

The most amazing deleted scene is a long version of the ending which is absolutely awful. Watching it really shows how a filmmaker can go wrong without realizing it. It's amazing what a few judicious snips of excessive footage can do to improve an ending. I highly recommend you watch this...and also listen to the commentary James Cameron provides on how he came to his senses regarding reworking the ending. (A rare instance of humility on the part of Mr. Cameron.) It made a huge difference.

Yup, I mentioned this in another thread a while ago. Some of the deleted scenes are truly awful, (How about some ice? being another example). As great as the movie is, it came dangerously close to hitting the wrong notes.

I understand Cameron is working on a novel about Avatar. Apparently it won't be ready in time for the re-release. At least I haven't heard anything about it.
