"Brazil" (Maynard Ferguson recording) and "Desafinado" either by Nina Persson or Getz.

Vice Giuraldi (sp?) is a genius!

Have you heard Maynard Ferguson's McArthur Park? It's incredible!

I also love "Spain" by several groups, originally Chick Correa...

I like Night Train by Duke Ellington. Actually, the jazz band I'm in is playing this song for a performance coming up...

I got to see Maynard Ferguson at a school concert, he was amazing. Brazil is great, and you mean Nina Persson from the Cardigans and now A Camp? when did she do that song?

    Ah, now...is Duke Ellington Jazz?

I love Big Band stuff. I wouldn't call it Jazz though.

If that's the qualification, I dig Louis Armstrong and Goodman and Ellington and Ella and...well, hell, Sinatra. Who doesn't like Sinatra?

But I hear Jazz and I think "Marsalis" and weird fusion stuff, which I really hate.

I got to play with Maynard with my University Jazz band...suffice it to say, it rocked! ;)

Nina Persson (yes, from the cardigans) has an AMAZING recording of "Desafinado", and her voice is simply divine. I highly recommend it (look for it on Audiogalaxy or Kazaa). I hear she is going to do more jazz, which is good news...

My favorite jazz piece is...mine! ;)

I mess around on my piano with jazz progression junk way too often. I love it.

Oh, I have to say Sing, Sing, Sing with the Benny Goodman Orchestra, but I have to say I prefer the Carnegie Hall live recording. Goodman's solo in that is just amazing. It's no wonder he is the king of swing. That recording is easily IMO the best twelve minutes of jazz I have ever heard. Harry James does some great solo work as well on trumpet, and of course Gene Krupa is the backbone to the piece. IMO the only weak part is the Jess Stacy piano solo, but the rest of the piece is so good that I let that slide. Goodman is my idol. :)

Edit: Imrahil2001, Ellington is definitely jazz, what else would it be?

Definatly Sing Sing Sing at Carnigie Hall.

    Best peice. ever.

how could you say that jess stacy's piano solo is weak! its the best solo by far!

Crescendo and Diminuendo in blue live at the 56 newport Jazz festival (by the duke)comes a close second, and so what by miles davis comes third.

    Jazz is the best!

I guess I always just called him Big Bands. Jazz to me has this connotation of "no set music, we're just going to improvise for 40 minutes" thing. I really don't like modern Jazz because of that. Well, and because I don't like saxophones doing all this weird **** (like Lisa Simpson seems to like).

So I would call it Big Bands or Swing. I've even heard it referred to as "Classical Jazz" which seems to work.

TheBoogieMan, When I said it was weak what I meant was I thought it was the weakest part in the piece. To me the piano just doesn't seem to fit as well with Krupa as the trumpet or the clarinet. The solo its self is great, its just piano didn't really fit the tone and mood of the piece IMO. Nothing against Jess Stacy. :)

as far as Jazz is concerned, i can't think of any favorite piece... But in Latin Jazz, the best piece ever is "From Within", Michel Camilo (piano), Anthony Jackson (6 string bass), Horacio "el negro" Hernandez (drums)... It's just an incredible physical performance. Each guy has an incredible talent. This is just amazing.

I'm not really into Jazz, though I like to listen to it. I LOVE big-band stuff... are there any recommed pieces or artists I should look for?

I heard some big-band stuff of Phil Collins... that really ROCKED...

Oh, and by the way, i like "Take Five"... if it's Jazz... mmh, yeah, I'm sure it is.

Big-Band is most certainly Jazz, just a sub-set of it.

It's like saying "Are Film Scores classed as classical music". The answer, again, is yes

I'm a sucker for big band. Listening to "American Patrol" as we type

ooohh... i like coltrane as well, but i think his best one was Mr. P.C.

If anyone likes big-band and long solos (ie Coltrane) get Diminuendo and Crescendo in blue by Ellington.

    27 chorus' of pure bliss.
